About the Role:

The Director – Safety is responsible to provide oversite and guidance to operations and safety management regarding compliance with Warrior Met Coal Safety Policies, federal and state mining laws. The position ensures compliance with MSHA, OSHA, and corporate standards and provides leadership to drive continuous improvement in safety culture and performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote a proactive safety culture focused on hazard recognition and risk reduction
  • Serve as a visible safety leader across all operations
  • Lead company hazard identification and risk assessment processes
  • Analyze injury trends, near misses, high-potential events, and exposure data
  • Examine surface and underground areas of the mine, records, citations and provide feedback and guidance to site management (Operations and Safety) regarding compliance with Warrior Met Coal Safety Policies, federal and state mining laws.
  • Evaluate citations in conjunction with Safety Manager for validity, gravity and provide guidance and direction on conferencing and contesting citations.
  • Evaluate citation conference sheets (completed by company personnel traveling with inspectors) for appropriate information.
  • Provide guidance and direction to Safety Managers.
  • Interaction with the Manager of Safety Awareness & Surface Safety to reduce and eliminate accidents and injuries.
  • Execute the company’s overall safety strategy and annual safety objectives
  • Other duties as directed by management.
Who You Are:
  • College degree with experience in engineering or safety or related discipline
  • Seven (7) years’ experience in underground coal mining industry
  • Minimum of two (2) - years’ experience as Operation/Production Supervisor
  • Certified Mine Foreman/Assistant Mine Foreman/Mine Examiner
  • Certified Alabama Mine Foreman/Fire boss or agreement to obtain the qualification at the next available testing opportunity.
  • Proficient computer skills, organization skills and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Works well with minimal direct supervision.
  • Work shift is typically day shift but requires ability to respond to situations on off shifts.
  • Work shift will include off shifts as scheduled or as the need arises.
  • Work shift will include weekend work as scheduled.
  • Requires travel and work at operating site(s) within Warrior Met Coal.

Environment and Safety:
  • Improve on safety standards by holding safety meetings, conducting safety interactions, and taking corrective action where required.
  • Ensure adherence to State, Federal and Company workplace policies and standard work procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control.
  • Maintain a high level of safety performance through effective communication, monitoring, and revision of standard work procedures.
  • Identify and report safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damage at the workplace.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled safety meetings and training.
  • Investigate accidents and near misses with a view toward positive action, through training, equipment set-up or equipment repair and report on findings and conclusions.
  • Maintain environmental awareness amongst the workforce by holding meetings and involving the environmental department in related subjects.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental policy, work standards, management plans and regulatory obligations and requirements.
  • Integrate environmental policies, programs, and practices into all activities of the organization.
Physical Requirements – Surface and Underground Facilities:
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time on uneven, rocky surfaces.
  • Must be able to sit for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Must be able to walk for up to 4 hours at a time.
