Reports To: Principal

JOB SUMMARY

Assists special education teaching staff by performing instructional tasks with students in small groups and one-on-one settings, record-keeping and supervision. Performs duties with close supervision.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties may be assigned.
  1. Follows and maintains knowledge of applicable District policies and procedures.
  2. Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments (reading, math, and writing groups.)
  3. Works directly with students with a variety of special needs.
  4. Assists students with tracking assignments and managing behaviors.
  5. Tests and records students' abilities in math, writing, and reading and progress as directed by licensed staff member.
  6. May be asked to clean up spills and wipe down tables in cafeteria when assigned supervision duty.
  7. Monitors and assists students as needed in the classroom, at recess, at lunch, and at other places students gather.
  8. Supervises large groups of children at recess and lunch ensuring safety and security at all times.
  9. Assists with physical management of students including lifting, moving, positioning, feeding, and toileting or diapering and restraint when necessary under direction of the licensed staff member.
  10. Assists with physical needs of students (carrying books, clearing access ways, etc.)
  11. Escorts and supervises assigned students in various activities (music, PE, recess, library, etc.).
  12. Implements and tracks Individual Education Plan (IEP) data. May assist with IEP meeting preparation.
  13. Models appropriate behavior in various social settings.
  14. Presents subject matter to students, utilizing variety of methods and techniques such as lecture, discussion and supervised role playing.
  15. Confers with teaching staff on progress of students.
  16. Assists staff with record keeping, copying, filing, grading assignments and taking attendance.
  17. Transports recess equipment outside, reports unsafe equipment and secures equipment when not in use.
  18. Assists with loading and unloading students from buses, transitioning kids from classroom to lunchroom, music, recess, library, etc.
  19. Assists the licensed staff member in developing educational materials (copying, typing, laminating, etc.).
  20. Implements daily activities and instruction for students under the direction of and planned by the licensed staff member.
  21. Follows prescribed daily schedule as outlined by the building administrator.
  22. Assists the licensed staff member in the set-up and maintenance of the classroom, materials and supplies.
  23. Assists the licensed staff member in scheduling appropriate meetings and completion of paperwork.
  24. Assists the licensed staff member, when directed, in communicating with parents/guardians.
  25. May administer medications or medical intervention within the scope of District policy(ies) and state and federal law, under the direction of licensed staff or building administrator.
  26. Participates effectively at regular team meetings with licensed staff member and other support staff using appropriate social skills.
  27. Assists in maintaining a safe environment for students at all times.
  28. Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.
  29. Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, administrators and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
  30. Appropriately maintains and secures confidential records and inquiries.
  31. Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students.
  32. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
  33. Attends work regularly and is punctual.
