Job Description
Purpose Statement The ASL Interpreter will provide American Sign Language interpreting services to students, staff, and families within assigned educational settings with specific responsibility for working with individual and/or small groups of students. This job reports to the School Principal of the assigned school(s), as determined by district supervisory personnel. Requirements High School Diploma. Associate's Degree or equivalent experience preferred. 3-5 years of experience interpreting in professional and/or educational settings is preferred. Strong fluency in interpreting voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice in academic settings Demonstrated knowledge of Deaf Culture required. Demonstrated knowledge and background in the Educational Interpreting field preferred. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Serve as an interpreter for student(s) who are deaf or hearing impaired. Interpret student IEP meetings when student is present. Demonstrate ability to work well with a diverse population across multiple classroom settings and at multiple grade levels. Ability to prioritize requested services and responsibilities. Comfortable working with young students and adults. Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives. Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g. read stories, listen to students read, providing writing assistance, reinforce English lessons, provide spelling practice, computer learning programs, etc.) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards. Assists teachers with classroom assignments, tests, homework, make-up work
