Job Posting The following position is available with the City of Lafayette.If you are interested in being considered for this position, applications are ONLY available on-line at work4lafayette.com The application deadline is open until filled Available with the Office:POSITION:Animal Control Officer LOCATION:City Hall 20 N 6th Street HOURS:Tuesday-Friday 12p-8p, Saturday 10a-6p SALARY RANGE:$2,117.82-$2,430.48 bi-weekly DUTIES:The first duty of an Animal Control Officer is to protect the health and well-being of the public in which it serves.In addition, protecting the health and well-being of the animals that reside within the City of Lafayette.It is the duty of the City of Lafayette Animal Control Officer to uphold state and local laws pertaining specifically to animals.An Animal Control Officer responds to a variety of service calls ranging but not limited to:Animal abuse/neglect Abandonment of animals Injured/sick domesticated animals Handling of exotic animals Animal bites Animals running at large Nuisance animals Sick and injured wildlife Nuisance barking complaints Deceased animals in the roadway Assisting the Lafayette Police Department Any animal emergency that may arise.Animal Control Officers will appear in court and work closely with all local law enforcement agencies.REQUIREMENTS:Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.Must be 21 years of age or older.Must possess a valid State of Indiana driver's license with demonstrated safe driving record.Experience with performing animal care, maintenance, or control of domestic or wild animals and dealing with the public is preferred.Preferred experience should also include recognition of animal behavior and disease and first aid treatment of animals.Applicants have the probability of witnessing and investigating sensitive scenes that may be disturbing or hard to see.Must be able to attend necessary training, sometimes out of town.Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and communicate using tact and diplomacy.Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.Must possess a strong capacity for problem solving.Applicant must be able to work alone often and have strong self-starter mentality.Animal Control Officers often go to service calls alone or work a shift where they are the only officer on duty.Applicants will be subject to a polygraph exam and background check.PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT Incumbent will spend most of their time working outdoors and occasionally in adverse weather conditions during their shift.Incumbent will perform duties while in a facility that maintains dangerous animals that could cause injury and be exposed to zoonotic diseases.Incumbent may be required to lift 50 to 100 pounds (sometimes more), crouching/kneeling, pushing/pulling/carrying objects, bending, reaching and sitting/standing/walking for extended periods of time.Exposure to difficult individuals, fumes, odors, dust, dirt, animal waste and extreme temperatures.Requires use of arms to reach and carry and use of hands to operate and handle objects and animals.Also requires color and visual perception as well as oral communications ability and the ability to accurately perceive sounds.Will regularly be required to work weekends and holidays.The City of Lafayette is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
