Job PurposeThe South Carolina Department of Education is seeking a skilled and dependable Service Technician II to perform advanced diagnostic, repair, and preventive maintenance work on school buses and fleet vehicles. This position plays a key role in fleet readiness, field service response, and maintaining safe, compliant transportation services for students across South Carolina. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesEnsure fleet readinessPerform skilled maintenance and repair work to keep fleet vehicles service-ready, minimize downtime, and ensure accurate maintenance documentation. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and computer-controlled vehicle systems using approved tools, procedures, and diagnostic equipment. Respond to road calls and service requests to perform on-site repairs, assess vehicle condition, or coordinate towing and follow-up repairs. Repair and maintain engines, transmissions, brake systems, HVAC systems, and related components in compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Install and maintain required safety and operational equipment such as warning lights, radios, decals, and accessories to ensure vehicles meet operational standards. Complete accurate repair records, maintain parts and service truck inventory, and keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety, environmental, and PPE requirements. Each position is located at one of the eleven (11) AREA I bus maintenance shops and does NOT float between shops. In the supplemental questions, please indicate your preferred shop assignments. Area I shops include: Aiken, Brunson, Darlington, Florence, Latta, Lee, Lexington, Marlboro, Orangeburg, Sumter, and Williamsburg counties.This position is located in the Office of Transportation. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Work experience involving the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment.Valid driver’s license at time of hire. Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger, Air Brake, and Tanker endorsements within 120 days of employment. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Working ConditionsWork is performed in shop, field, and outdoor environments with exposure to noise, weather conditions, oil, grease, fumes, and operational hazards. The position requires lifting, bending, kneeling, climbing, and prolonged standing. Adherence to all safety, environmental, and PPE requirements is mandatory.
