Job Description
JOB The Assistant Director of Finance (Auditor-Controller) supports the strategic, operational, and administrative oversight of the County’s financial management functions. Under the general direction of the Director of Finance/Auditor-Controller, this role helps plan, manage, and coordinate diverse areas including financial reporting, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, property tax administration, internal controls, and compliance.The position supervises multiple accounting and fiscal teams, ensures accurate and compliant financial recordkeeping, and may serve as Acting Auditor-Controller in the Director’s absence. The Assistant Director of Finance also plays a key role in County budget development, year end close, audit preparation, and implementation of financial policies and procedures. As a leader, the ideal candidate demonstrates excellent communication skills, a collaborative management style, and the ability to mentor, coach, and develop staff. They thrive in a fast paced environment, can balance high level oversight with hands on problem solving, and are committed to accuracy, transparency, and public service. Experience supervising financial teams and a strong working foundation in governmental accounting systems and spreadsheet/database applications are essential. Department SummaryThe Auditor-Controller’s Office, within the Finance Department, is responsible for delivering transparent, accurate, and compliant financial services that support Mono County’s operations, residents, and public agencies. Core departmental functions include financial reporting, payroll administration, general accounting, property tax accounting and apportionment, accounts payable, treasury reconciliation, cost allocation, and compliance with state and federal reporting requirements.Staff work collaboratively to maintain the County’s financial systems, uphold internal controls, and ensure fiscal integrity across all County funds, special districts, and mandated programs.
