Job Description
Introduction The Village of Maple Bluff is seeking a motivated, team-oriented, and community-focused leader to serve as Assistant Fire Chief within the MBFD. This is a full-time leadership position operating under the direction of the Fire Chief / EMS Director and serving as a key member of the Department’s command staff. The Assistant Fire Chief plays a critical role in supporting daily fire, rescue, EMS, training, prevention, and operational activities while helping implement strategic direction and organizational priorities. The position supports a culture of professionalism, accountability, teamwork, continuous improvement, and community engagement within a combination Fire/EMS department serving a small, independent community that strongly values high-quality local emergency services. Position Summary ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Leadership and Supervision : Implements and reinforces policies, procedures, and directives Serves as Incident Commander at emergency scenes when required o Assists in the recruitment, evaluation, development, and retention of department personnel Supports performance management, accountability systems, and personnel development Fosters a positive, team-oriented, and professional work environment o Ensures compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and operational standards 2. Operational Management: Oversees day-to-day operations to ensure readiness and effective deployment of resources Ensures operations are conducted in accordance with policies, procedures, and standards Coordinates with departments and external agencies to support operational effectiveness Conducts inspections of apparatus, equipment, and facilities to maintain operational integrity Supports data-informed decision making and continuous improvement efforts EMS and Public Safety: Supports the delivery of EMS services, emergency response, and public safety operations Assists in ensuring compliance with applicable EMS and public safety regulations and standards Participates in emergency preparedness and response coordination efforts Training and Development: Oversees and supports the design and delivery of training programs for personnel at all levels Ensures training aligns with certification requirements, operational needs, and objectives Promotes a culture of safety through training and adherence to best practices Supports mentoring, professional development, and succession planning efforts Community Engagement: Supports fire prevention initiatives and public safety education programs Represents the Department in community meetings, public events, and outreach efforts Salary Information Competitive Salary ($76K-$88K, dependent upon qualifications) Recruitment and retention incentive package valued at up to $6,000, including: a $2,000 signing bonus and $4,000 retention incentive upon successful completion of two years of service (contingent upon continuous employment in the position and satisfactory performance during the service period) Comprehensive health and dental insurance Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) participation with employer contributions Paid time off, including vacation, sick leave, and holidays Professional development and leadership development opportunities. Job Details The selected candidate will be expected to support operational readiness, personnel development, emergency response coordination, training initiatives, and long-term workforce stability while helping ensure the Department remains responsive to the evolving needs of the community. This position operates on a 48/96 shift rotation and is expected to participate in department training, meetings, and community events as operationally necessary.
