NATURE OF WORK: This is a full-time, highly responsible, professional position that contains a broad range of duties within the library and manuscript department. A person in this position reports to the Head Librarian and Curator of Manuscripts. ILLUSTRATED EXAMPLES OF WORK: Assist library users (in-person, by mail, email and/or telephone) in locating and using research materials, by first determining exactly what information is needed, then using library indexes and reference sources, including electronic resources and manuscript finding aids, to retrieve books, photographs, genealogy files, manuscripts and microfilm. Perform duties with the Ohio Obituary Index, including: Fill and/or proof obit orders, respond and fulfill “Other Source” requests, add and correct index data, compile monthly statistics, send and track yearly invoices to partner libraries, add/update administrators of partner libraries, and manage the comments section. Greet patrons, give library (ORR) overview, direct patrons to the sign-in-sheet, and etc. Work with the head librarian to design and present basic genealogy classes to the public. Price used books/periodicals and maintain the used book sale area located in the museum store. Update the Hayes’ family genealogy on RootsMagic 8 software. Re-shelve books, file local history materials, write thank you notes to donors, and operate copiers, microfilm readers, and printers. Process manuscript collections for research accessibility. Research and write finding aids for manuscript collections. Work with the curator of manuscripts to digitize and index manuscript materials. Assist the curator of manuscripts in researching and implementing public programming. Perform other duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Knowledge of genealogical resources and tools of research, including online databases. Ability to determine what is needed by the researcher and then locate and retrieve relevant materials. Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification System. Ability to work independently with a high degree of accuracy and reasonable speed. Multitask to meet various requests from colleagues, volunteers and patrons. Provide excellent customer service by maintaining a friendly, businesslike, courteous attitude while being flexible and patient with patrons and volunteers. Able to work a minimum of 2 Saturdays a month. Follow directions, ask questions, and show initiative. Computer skills/experience required. Abide by policies in the HPLM employee handbook. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, talk and/or listen up to one hour. The employee is also required to kneel, stoop and crouch. Requires a normal range of hearing and vision. Requires lifting and carrying books and boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to climb two flights of stairs unassisted. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to work with computers, keyboards, photocopier, telephones and technical equipment. TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Working is performed in a library / archival environment. Frequent contact with staff and the public. Work may be stressful at times. Weekend work (Saturday) is required. Some exposure to dust. Typical work day is 9 to 5. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree and/or related work experience which, in the judgment of the organization meets the requirement of the position. Knowledge of basic genealogy and local history is helpful. A clear background check is required.
