Summary of Job The Verona Fire Department is now accepting applications for the position of Battalion Chief of Training. Under the general direction of the Fire Chief, this position is responsible for the administration of work related to the training and safety needs of the department for fire suppression, search and rescue, emergency medical service, hazardous materials, specialized rescue operations, and other related training topics. The person in this position also serves as the Department Safety Officer and is responsible for the coordination of department training and safety activities. The employee in this position must exercise considerable judgment and discretion in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating department programs and services related to training and safety. The work involves considerable emphasis on overseeing employees and outside instructors conducting training for the department. The City of Verona is a great place to work ! Job Duties and Responsibilities ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following duties are normal for this position; however, the duties listed are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Develops, implements, updates, and evaluates programs related to fire suppression, emergency medical service, hazardous materials, fire prevention, and specialized rescue training activities. Evaluates and coordinates all training requests and scheduling for Department personnel to attend out-of-Department schools, seminars and conferences. Attends schools, conferences and other meetings to keep abreast of current trends in the field. Ensures that department staff is trained on apparatus and equipment use and its maintenance for safe and efficient operation. Ensure all staff is trained to their appropriate NIMS training level. Serves as the Department Safety Officer and in those roles is involved in assessing processes and conditions, providing related training, and drafting and implementing related policies or procedures. Establishes the Department Safety Committee pursuant to Wisconsin SPS 330.05 and holds meetings of that Committee s at least twice each year. Ensures that required Emergency Medical Service training is completed within the designated time frame. Recommends the purchase equipment and supplies for training and safety. Ensures all training reports are accurate, complete, and maintained in compliance with applicable standards and practices. Maintains training records and files on all department personnel. Collects information and completes necessary reports concerning department training and safety and completes related administrative tasks. Maintains all department training and safety records. Establishes and maintains a safe and harmonious work environment that ensures that the department is ready to safely, expediently and efficiently respond to all requests for service. Responds to fires and other calls for emergency assistance when requested and in compliance with all department procedures and operational guidelines. Serves as the “Officer-in-charge” when scheduled or as required. Initiates the National Incident Management System and/or incident command system and serves as the “Incident Commander” when scheduled. Manages and participates in the development and administration of assigned divisions budgets; directs funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; directs the monitoring and approval of expenditures; directs and implements adjustments as necessary. Assists and/or leads the development of policies, procedures, and standards in order to enhance the overall operations and functions of the department and this position's assigned program area(s) of responsibilities.
