Bookkeeper/ Payroll Specialist Wayne Burges & Company, P.C. — San Antonio, TX (1604 / NW Military / Bitters area) Schedule: Four-day workweeks off-season (Monday–Thursday after April 15) About the Firm Wayne Burges & Company, P.C. is a boutique CPA and law firm serving closely held businesses and their owners. The Role We are adding a Bookkeeper / Payroll Specialist to our team. This position handles day-to-day bookkeeping and full-cycle payroll for a portfolio of business clients. You will work directly with our senior accounting staff and firm leadership. This role is designed to grow. As this position takes ownership of routine bookkeeping and payroll work, our Senior Accountant will move into higher-level review, financial analysis, and client advisory support. The right candidate will be part of building something — not just filling a seat. Key Responsibilities Bookkeeping & Accounting Enter and categorize financial transactions in QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop Perform monthly bank, credit card, and loan reconciliations Prepare and post journal entries Assist with month-end and year-end closings Prepare financial reports for client review Assist with cleanup and catch-up bookkeeping projects Communicate professionally with clients on bookkeeping matters Payroll Administration Process full-cycle payroll for multiple clients (weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, and monthly) Calculate and manage tax withholdings, garnishments, and benefit deductions Prepare and file federal and state payroll tax returns, including Forms 941, 940, and Texas state reports Prepare and distribute Forms W-2, W-3, 1099-NEC, and 1099-MISC Reconcile payroll tax liabilities and related balance sheet accounts Work with payroll providers including Paychex, ADP, Gusto, and QuickBooks Payroll Respond to payroll notices from the IRS and state agencies Other Filings & Support Prepare and file Texas sales and use tax returns Assist with Texas Franchise Tax reports Follow up proactively on open items and communicate clearly with the team What We Are Looking For 3 to 5 years of bookkeeping and payroll experience, preferably in a CPA firm or outsourced accounting environment Strong QuickBooks Online experience required; QuickBooks Desktop experience preferred Hands-on experience with full-cycle payroll processing and payroll tax compliance Working knowledge of debits and credits and general accounting principles Experience with Texas sales tax and payroll tax filings Proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple clients and deadlines Professional written and verbal communication skills Someone who gets things done without being told twice Why This Role Is Different Small firm where your work matters and is noticed Direct access to senior leadership and mentorship Four-day workweeks off-season (Monday–Thursday after April 15) A defined career path — this role is designed to grow Exposure to a wide range of business clients and industries We hire for the long term, not constant turnover What the First Few Months Typically Look Like While every person and situation is different, this role generally ramps up as follows: Initial focus on understanding our clients, systems, and bookkeeping workflows Taking ownership of monthly bookkeeping and reconciliations for assigned clients Gradual transition into full payroll processing under guidance Increasing responsibility and independence as familiarity grows We care more about sound judgment and steady progress than rigid timelines.
