Job Description
JOB SUMMARY: Inspects new and existing buildings and structures to enforce conformance to building, grading and zoning laws and approved plans, specifications, and standards by performing the following duties: EXAMPLE OF DUTIES ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Inspects residential, commercial, industrial, and other buildings during and after construction to ensure that components such as electrical, plumbing, footings, floor framing, completed framing, chimneys, and stairways meet provisions of building, grading, zoning, and safety laws and approved plans, specifications, and standards. Observes conditions and issues notices for corrections to persons responsible for conformance. Obtains evidence and prepares reports concerning violations which have not been corrected. Interprets requirements and recommends compliance procedures to contractors, craftworkers, and owners. Keeps inspection records and prepares reports for use by administrative or judicial authorities. Conducts surveys of existing buildings to determine extent of prescribed maintenance, housing violations, or hazardous conditions. Reviews requests for and issues building permits. Examines and reviews construction plans to ensure that building codes and ordinances are observed. Counsels builders, contractors, and other interested parties on building requirements; makes recommendations relating to building codes and ordinances. Meets with fire and health officials regarding inspection and regulatory activities; meets and confers with City Officials, contractors and the public on all aspects of inspectional work. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: Supervises individuals performing building inspections. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Community Development Director. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION OTHER REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of current building construction methods, materials, tools, and equipment particularly as applied to the main structure, electrical systems, and the plumbing, heating, and air conditioning systems for residential, commercial, public, and industrial buildings. Considerable knowledge of Federal, State, and local building, electrical, and plumbing codes and regulations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
