Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees and up to one calendar year for part-time employees. Title: (Casual Hire) Lab Technician/Project Manager Position Number: * Casual Hire Hiring Unit: College of Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering Location: Manoa Date Posted: 5/9/2026 Closing Date: 5/11/2026 Salary: $35 per hour Schedule: Up to 10-15 hours per week Full Time/Part Time: Part Time Temporary/Permanent: Temporary Duties: Provide mentorship, instruct and guide students on assembly and test flights of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), including quadcopters, octocopters, hexacopters, fixed-wing aircraft. Lead efforts to fix the UAV hardware in the UAV Lab of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (located in Holmes Hall 306) and make them functional for various applications. Assist in the development and organization of a NASA-funded Hawai’i Center for Aeronautics and Air Mobility Research (ACEIR) project activities and periodically report them to Principal Investigator (PI). Coordinate with the project team and support activities of the participating high school and university students in UAV Lab. Provide data for the project reports as needed. Responsibilities: Provide mentorship, instructions and guidance to students on assembly and test flights of UAVs. Determine the UAV hardware issues in the UAV Lab and lead efforts to fix these issues. Maintain the UAV Lab inventory up to date, cleanliness of the Lab and keep it ready and professional to host the project activities. Create log files of the work performed in the Lab and test fields along with work hours to support the timesheets. Report monthly updates to the PI, work with the project team and attend project meetings. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge and experience in STEM-related projects, good communication skills. Experience on working in a high school environment and providing mentorship and guidance to students. Knowledge about NASA aeronautics projects and opportunities for students. Basic knowledge of UAV assembly and test flights, Matlab, Adobe and MS Office programs/software, experience on data collection and analysis and word processing. Desirable Qualifications Experience in informal teaching at high schools. Knowledge about NASA’s aeronautics-related, projects, abilities to work with high school and university students, abilities to set up, coordinate and manage UAV project activities, including UAV assembly and test flights, experience on data collection, analysis, and its reporting. Knowledge and experience in UAV assembly, its hardware and test flights, some knowledge in the areas of mechanics, experience with Matlab, C++ and/or other programming languages/platforms.
