Department Department of Neurosurgery Track Clinician Rank Assistant Professor Title Chief of Neurosurgery at the St. Louis Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care System Position Description The Chief of Neurosurgery at the St. Louis Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care System is a faculty leadership position within the Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) Taylor Department of Neurosurgery. The Chief is responsible for administrative, clinical, educational, and supervisory oversight of the Neurosurgery Section at the VA. The role includes leading complex spinal surgical care, coordinating multidisciplinary services, ensuring high-quality clinical outcomes, and supporting the academic mission through teaching and scholarly activity. The position reports operationally to the VA Associate Chief of Staff for Surgical Services and academically to the Chair of Neurosurgery at Washington University School of Medicine. In this position the candidate will evaluate, diagnose, and treat Veterans with spinal and peripheral nerve disorders. Partner with Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), nurses, and technicians to ensure efficient clinic operations and timely follow-up. Serve as attending neurosurgeon for hospitalized patients at the VA. and coordinate care with inpatient hospital teams. Perform complex spinal procedures, including spinal reconstruction and advanced operative management of degenerative, traumatic, and neoplastic spine conditions. Lead multidisciplinary perioperative teams including anesthesiology, surgical nursing, APPs, and OR technical staff. Respond promptly to urgent and emergent neurosurgical consultations. Participate equitably in the VA neurosurgery call schedule. Basic Qualifications Required qualifications include the completion of a residency in a U.S. neurosurgery training program, board certification or eligibility in neurosurgery, and completion of a spinal neurosurgery fellowship. Must be able to practice in the U.S. Additional Qualifications The successful candidate will be a strategic leader with leadership experience in leading a surgical practice and a record of collaborative clinical leadership in program growth and development
