Job Summary We are seeking a dedicated and energetic Church Sexton/Custodian to maintain the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of our church facilities. This vital role ensures that the church environment remains welcoming, pristine, and well-maintained for worship services, community events, and daily operations. The ideal candidate will bring a proactive attitude, strong attention to detail, and experience in custodial and facilities maintenance to support our vibrant congregation. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Cleaning Sweep/vacuum/wash floors. Dust all flat surfaces as needed. Realign chairs and tables prior to Sunday services and prior to special functions (weddings, memorial services, other) Wash and disinfect toilets (bowl and seat). Clean sinks and kitchen counters. Resupply toilet tissue and paper towel dispensers. Perform minor repairs, such as leaking faucets, paint touch up, replace light bulbs, etc. as needed and requested. 2. Rubbish Keep trashcans and rubbish bins in reasonable order. Set out rubbish/garbage weekly according to pick-up schedule. Ensure all items are recycled accordingly. 3. Grounds Pick up trash and litter on walks, drives and parking areas. Sweep entrance walkway as required. Plan for and perform maintenance projects as arranged with the Church Administrator (e.g. painting, repairs, etc.). 4. Supplies Obtain maintenance and cleaning supplies as needed and in anticipation of needs. Keep maintenance areas organized including but not limited to all hallways, furnace room, and egress doors. 5. Security Check regularly when the Church has been in use and always checks after major events. Make certain that: Windows and doors are closed and locked. The gas range is shut off. Water faucets in toilets and kitchen are turned off. The heat is off\thermostats to lower temperatures. Reports any problems to the Church Administrator as soon as they are observed. 6. Church Functions For all Church functions: Check church calendar to be continuously aware of all regular and special functions scheduled in the Church. Plan a work schedule so that the building is clean and neat for all functions, especially Sunday services. Arrange facilities, chairs and tables as required and in a timely manner. Following use: clean areas used for special functions and check the building security. Functions that are part of the Church’s programs (whether ongoing or special events) or are hosted during the regular workday are part of the Sexton’s regular hours. 7. Extra Functions The Sexton is expected to work during extra functions that are outside of the Church’s regular programming and thus not part of the Sexton’s regular hours. Each event will be billed for the Sexton’s services (if such services are needed). PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS Must be able to climb stairs to access tools and supplies Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds. Must be able to climb a 10-foot ladder Must be able to work independently REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The Sexton will be primarily responsible to the Church Administrator and the Rector. The Sexton will complete and update the Sexton task list on an ongoing basis and will participate in all staff meetings. OTHER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Hours: a. The sexton shall work 25 hours per week (Sunday through Thursday) with the understanding that some weeks will require greater hours to fulfill needed duties. b. Additional hours should be tracked as comp time to be used for additional time off. c. The Sexton shall report to the Church Administrator any concerns regarding time allotments for regular duties and special projects. 4. Job Evaluation and Provisions: a. Year-round, part-time position. b. Upon employment, the first three months are considered probationary. c. Salary and performance will be reviewed by the Rector on an annual basis. d. The sexton shall provide the proper information to abide by the church’s Safe Church Policy and will submit to CORI and background checks. Pay: $16.00 - $20.00 per hour Work Location: In person
