How You'll Contribute The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project on its campus (called Base Camp), which will be completed in 2026.Components of the new guest experience will include a state-of-the-art pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk-through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and exciting new event space.The capstone of the renovation is a one-of-a-kind nighttime experience in the courtyard.The Mailroom and Distribution Clerk is a critical operational role responsible for ensuring the efficient and secure flow of all internal and external communications, packages, and parcels across the National Geographic Society's dynamic Washington, D.C.campus.This role requires an individual who is highly organized, detail-oriented, committed and service-focused, dedicated to handling the vital logistics that support the daily function of a world-renowned organization.We are seeking a team member who values interoperability and is ready to jump in and support colleagues across different projects when needed.At the Museum of Exploration, we believe that our greatest successes come from shared expertise and a willingness to step outside of a single role.This isn't just a part of the job; it's a core aspect of how we operate and collaborate, reflecting the spirit of partnership that defines National Geographic's culture.Your Impact Responsibilities Include:Internal Delivery & Logistics:Serve as the face of internal logistics by timely and accurately delivering interoffice mail throughout the headquarters complex, directly contributing to seamless departmental operations.(30%) Shipping Expertise & Preparation:Manage outbound logistics by expertly preparing packages and parcels for shipment, determining the most efficient, secure, and cost-effective shipping methods that meet both organizational and customer requirements.(25%) System Management & Operations:Master and operate sophisticated shipping systems (including FedEx, UPS, and Hasler ICMC G2 USPS) to process daily mail, manage accounts, and order essential supplies and products to ensure the department runs smoothly.(20%) Security & Accountability:Ensure the security and traceability of all high-value items by meticulously logging all incoming packages, coordinating their secure delivery to tenants, and confirming prompt receipt to prevent loss.(20%) External Coordination:Coordinate and manage external courier services, arranging for timely pickup and delivery of critical packages and documents.Arranging for courier services to pick up and deliver packages.(15%) Minimum Education Required High School Diploma or equivalent.Minimum Years and Type of Experience A minimum of 1 year of related experience professional experience in a mailroom, warehouse, logistics, or similar high-volume operational environment.Knowledge and Skills Required Must be computer literate with demonstrated experience in operating specialized mail or shipping systems (e.g., FedEx/UPS systems).Strong oral and written communication skills are essential for effective service delivery and collaboration.Proven ability to maintain strong record-keeping systems and demonstrate exceptional organizational skills, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.Must be able to perform physical tasks required for handling and transporting mail and packages (e.g., standing for long periods, lifting up to 50 pounds.Desired Qualifications Basic understanding of domestic and international shipping regulations, including hazardous materials or customs documentation.Demonstrated ability to independently identify and resolve operational bottlenecks or service issues, showing initiative in improving mail flow processes.Collaboration and Teamwork Support various teams as needed, providing cross-trained coverage for breaks, absences, or high volume.Assist with general museum tasks such as maintaining public spaces, providing basic visitor assistance, and helping with event setup/breakdown.Supervision None Salary Information The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package.Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more.At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.The hourly range for this position is $20.10 - $21.16.In addition, the National Geographic Society offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package that includes, but is not li
