Controller Onyx Accounting Group Scottsdale, AZ (Hybrid or Remote) Onyx Accounting Group is a boutique accounting and advisory firm supporting closely held businesses with bookkeeping, controller, and CFO-level services. We work with clients who value accuracy, organization, and proactive financial partnership. We’re seeking an experienced Controller to take full ownership of day-to-day financial oversight for a portfolio of clients and serve as a senior-level resource within our accounting team. This role is intended for candidates who are already operating at a controller level and are comfortable independently overseeing work, making judgment calls, and interfacing directly with clients. What You’ll Do Own the month-end close process for multiple clients, from review through final delivery Oversee and review reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statements Ensure accuracy and consistency across client financials and reporting Prepare and review balance sheet and P&L analyses with supporting explanations Identify discrepancies, investigate variances, and determine appropriate corrections Serve as the primary controller-level point of contact for assigned clients Review work prepared by staff accountants and provide clear direction and feedback Collaborate with CFO and leadership on workflow improvement and process documentation Maintain organized, audit-ready client workpapers and support documentation What We’re Looking For 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with meaningful controller-level responsibility Demonstrated experience owning month-end close, not just assisting with it Strong working knowledge of GAAP Significant experience reviewing and approving work prepared by others Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online Strong Excel skills and comfort working independently with detailed financial data Ability to manage multiple clients and deadlines with minimal oversight Clear, professional communication skills with clients and internal team members Nice to Have Experience in public accounting or outsourced accounting environments Prior client-facing advisory or controller-for-hire experience Familiarity with multi-entity structures Interest in process improvement and documentation Why Onyx Flexible work environment Collaborative, experienced team Opportunity to work closely with CFO-level leadership Clear expectations and organized workflows Meaningful client impact Compensation: Commensurate with experience
