Job Description
Job Overview A Municipal Court Hearing Officer is responsible for presiding over and adjudicating civil traffic cases under both Title 28, Arizona Revised Statutes and the Phoenix City Code. Additionally, Hearing Officers handle non-traffic, Phoenix City Code violations such as zoning and fire code violations. The successful applicant will be appointed by the Chief Presiding Judge of the Phoenix Municipal Court for a two-year period, renewable by the Chief Presiding Judge. EXPERIENCE: Qualified applicants will possess either (1) a Juris Doctor or equivalent law degree; OR (2) a Bachelor’s degree with at least three years’ experience in Arizona traffic law. Those highly preferred applicants will possess a law degree, be admitted to the State Bar of Arizona, will have practiced law in Arizona for at least five years, to include experience in, and working knowledge about, traffic laws, the state procedural rules for civil traffic cases, City of Phoenix ordinances, local rules of the Phoenix Municipal Court for civil cases, Rules of Evidence, and courtroom procedures. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Applicants must be twenty-one (21) years of age and be of good moral character. Successful completion of a course for certification to act as a Hearing Officer will be required following hire.
