Job Description
Internship, Full Time USD $18 per hour (funding assistance) Washington DC, United States of America The Embassy of Australia in Washington, DC is recruiting for paid internship positions for a Howard University student, with a duration of 8-10 weeks, through to Friday, 14 August 2026. The Embassy is one of seven Australian government posts in the United States and represents Australia’s broader interests in the Americas. The interns will work within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The role of DFAT is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program, and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas. DFAT works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional, and bilateral interests. About the Position The Congressional Liaison Office is a team responsible for the strategic management of the Embassy’s engagement with the US Congress and for monitoring, analysing and providing advice on US political developments of interest to Australia. Interns will perform a range of duties, including: assisting with research and projects related to US elections and political developments, domestic and foreign/trade policy and congressional activities of relevance to Australia including but not limited to, foreign and trade policy performing general administrative duties, including database use assisting with the Embassy’s outreach to Congress. Conduct and Ethics As part of the Australian public service, the Embassy of Australia demands the highest standards of professional conduct from its employees. In agreeing to participate in the Embassy of Australia Internship Program and undertake duties as directed, interns are required to comply with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Locally Engaged Staff Code of Conduct, which takes account of the particular significance of the department’s representational role outside of Australia. They should be ready to accept direction and guidance from Embassy officers. Funding assistance Interns receive a rate of pay of $18.00 per hour. Interns are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, and health insurance arrangements. Obligatory requirements To be an eligible applicant, you must: be either a US citizen or a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) be located in the DMV region for the complete duration of the program and able work from the Embassy premises for the duration of the program be willing to undergo a pre-employment check including mandatory police check be a student of Howard University have completed a minimum of one year of tertiary education.
