JOB Summary Under the direction of the Detention Warden, the Deputy Warden provides strategic leadership, management, organization, and oversight of all operations and activities of the County’s Detention Center. This role demonstrates ethical, professional, and service-oriented leadership while ensuring the effective administration of detention services. The Deputy Warden is responsible for staff training, performance management, and morale, and exercises independent judgment and discretion in decision-making. This position assists in developing and administering the department budget; formulates administrative policies; and develops comprehensive plans to address current and future needs related to incarceration, treatment, rehabilitation, behavior modification, and community reintegration. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive: Directs, supervises, and coordinates all detention center operations to ensure safe, secure, efficient, and high-quality services.Develops and implements plans to address evolving community needs, including facility capacity, alternatives to incarceration, cost reduction strategies, and recidivism reduction initiatives.Establishes and enforces operational standards in compliance with County policies, departmental procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.Oversees staff development, ensuring access to training and professional growth opportunities to enhance organizational effectiveness.Consults with the Detention Warden on operational challenges and strategic improvements for maintaining a modern, secure, and humane detention facility.Represents the department in meetings with government officials, community organizations, and the public; supports public relations efforts and policy development initiatives.Serves as a technical advisor on corrections-related matters to leadership, boards, and committees.Conducts organizational, operational, and analytical studies; develops recommendations for staffing, cost control, and revenue enhancement.Evaluates infrastructure, facilities, and equipment; develops and implements plans for maintenance, replacement, and upgrades.Establishes short- and long-term departmental goals and leads continuous improvement and customer service initiatives.Investigates operational deficiencies, identifies root causes, and implements corrective actions.Maintains records, reports, and documentation related to operations, compliance, and performance metrics.Manage grant programs, including identifying funding opportunities, preparing and submitting grant applications, ensuring compliance with grant requirements, tracking expenditures, and reporting outcomes.Oversees contract compliance and coordinates with external agencies and partners.Maintains current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and industry best practices through ongoing professional development.Supports the Detention Warden in ensuring the facility remains progressive, compliant, and aligned with modern correctional standards. Duties involve frequent sitting, speaking, hearing, and use of hands. Moderate physical effort may be required, including responding to emergencies or disturbances. Vision requirements include close and distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.Work EnvironmentWork is performed in both office settings and secure detention environments. The role may involve exposure to loud noise, stressful situations, and potentially hazardous conditions, including inmate disturbances. The Deputy Warden may encounter verbal abuse, bodily fluids, and other challenging conditions inherent to correctional facilities.
