Job Description
About the role The Director of Communications will lead and evolve the agency’s communications discipline, shaping integrated strategies that build reputation, influence perception, and drive business impact. You’ll operate as both a strategist and an operator, bringing sharp storytelling instincts, a deep understanding of today’s communications landscape, and the ability to connect narrative to business outcomes. While media relations remains a key component, this role extends beyond traditional PR to include thought leadership, executive visibility, reputation management, and broader communications strategy. This is an opportunity to expand Communications as a core, strategic offering within a growing agency. What you'll do Client Communications Counsel: Serves as a trusted communications advisor to clients. Provides strategic guidance on messaging, reputation management, stakeholder communications and executive visibility. Media Relations and Influence: Own relationships across media, industry influencers, and emerging platforms. Understand what’s pitchable and what’s not. Develop targeted outreach that connects client stories to what audiences actually care about. Manage inbound opportunities with speed and judgment. Story Development and Thought Leadership: Identify and shape the stories worth telling. Build thought leadership platforms that position brands and client executives as credible, differentiated voices. Translate business priorities, data, and expertise into narratives that resonate across earned and owned channels. Executive Visibility: Design and execute programs that elevate the presence of client executives through speaking engagements, bylined content, media opportunities, podcasts, and industry recognition. Provide counsel on messaging, positioning, and high-stakes communications moments. Reputation Management: Support clients in navigating complex or sensitive situations, ensuring consistent messaging and proactive reputation management. Advise on communications related to business changes, issues, or broader stakeholder considerations. Communications Planning and Channel Strategy: Determine the right mix of channels and platforms across earned and owned environments. In partnership with our broader team, guide how stories show up across media, digital, social, and experiential touchpoints to maximize impact. AI-Forward Thinking: Leverage AI tools for insights, monitoring, content development, and trend analysis, enabling faster, smarter, and more scalable communications strategies. Human Judgment at the Core: Success in this role depends on instincts and experience: knowing what matters, how to shape a narrative, and how to guide clients through both opportunity and complexity. What We're Looking For Experience: 7+ years in communications and/or public relations (agency experience across Healthcare, Technology, and/or Finance preferred) Proven ability to lead integrated communications programs, not just media relations Strong network across media, influencers, and industry platforms with a track record of securing meaningful coverage Exceptional storyteller with the ability to simplify complexity Strategic thinker who ties communications directly to business outcomes Confident advising senior executives and influencing decision-making Operates with ownership, urgency, and sound judgment Thrives in a fast-moving, collaborative environment AI Fluency: A demonstrated comfort and capability with AI tools as part of day-to-day work, using them to improve quality, move faster, and scale output effectively.
