The primary purpose of this position is to lead and implement the strategic development and execution of organizational goals and objectives for Inland Marine. Provide leadership, direction and support to underwriting team(s) and/or direct reports. Is responsible for underwriting, profitability, growth and retention of new and renewal business that is consistent with Inland Marine underwriting strategies. Manage underwriting functions to achieve profit, revenue, loss ratio, and expense targets. Ensure effective execution of best practices. In conjunction with PLL Leadership delegate underwriting authority to staff via letters of authority; monitor and revise as appropriate. Ensure a quality underwriting work product is produced consistent with letters of authority, underwriting strategy, standards and process. Provide coaching and training for underwriting staff based on results of underwriting audit review. Work with Operations to ensure all processing and service standards are met. Communicate, identified agency production, training or quality issues to Marketing. Develop and maintain relationships with internal resources (Actuarial, Product Development, Claim, IT, etc.) to coordinate services to customers. The primary purpose of this position is to manage the day-to-day work activities of a group of underwriters and underwriting support staff who are driven by a sense of hard work, and a pursuit of excellence laid out by the Markel Style. This position will work closely with the Regional Product Lead, Property & Marine in the Northeast Region to develop and execute on business and marketing strategies within an established geographic territory. Working with leadership and their team, this position will be responsible for balancing the team’s workloads and maintaining appropriate staffing levels. This position requires guidance in risk selection and pricing, specifically on daily transactional inland marine and property fire risks. Underwrite new and renewal business in a profitable manner, according to authority level, and established guidelines which are in compliance with the company’s underwriting philosophy. Responsible for addressing career and training needs on an individual basis. Communicate effectively and ensure team has been adequately updated on matters relating to workflow or procedural changes. Oversee the overall quality of the unit’s performance and measures the underwriting team expertise through periodic audits. Reviews unusual risks. Based on complexity, determines what additional research is required. Prepares preliminary appraisal of risk in excess of delegated authority. Consults with Manager or PLL on course of action. Responsibilities Achieves customer satisfaction and service standards for all retail brokers assigned to team and/or self; Establish a culture of professionalism and team cohesion that everyone can be proud of; Ensures team meets or exceeds set production/premium goals and departmental guidelines; Identifies strength and weaknesses in current procedures and recommend change in procedure, as needed; Makes recommendations on underwriting policy and pricing strategy to management; Provides training and coaching on marketing skills and broker management; Provides career planning and performance feedback to ensure proper staff development by coaching, motivating and building bench strength and reviews and evaluates personnel performance. Skills & Experience Bachelor’s degree preferred; 5-10 years of inland marine and property underwriting; 5+ years of management experience; Demonstrated aptitude to manage people and projects; Proven ability to make sound underwriting decisions; Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; Ability to achieve business goals and objectives; Demonstrated sales, marketing and relationship management skill.
