This position plays a pivotal role in defining how public education is communicated across California, reaching nearly six million students, thousands of schools, and a broad network of educators, families, policymakers, and community partners. Under the general direction of the Chief Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction/Chief of Staff, the Communications Director serves as the principal advisor on all internal and external communications for the Department. This role leads the development and execution of strategic communications that advance statewide education priorities, including public school programs, equity initiatives, and student success outcomes. The Communications Director oversees media relations, public information, digital communications, and executive messaging, ensuring that information is accurate, transparent, timely, and effectively tailored to diverse audiences across California. This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned communications leader to shape statewide dialogue on public education, lead through complex and high-profile issues, and advance communications strategies that support California’s commitment to educational excellence, equity, and opportunity for all students. Working Conditions TELEWORK OPTION HYBRID This position is headquartered in Sacramento and may be eligible for a hybrid telework schedule for eligible applicants residing in California. Currently, the hybrid telework schedule includes working remotely and working a minimum of 2 days per week in the office.
