Job Description
JOB TITLE: Elementary Principal IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Superintendent GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the Division Superintendent, the Elementary Principal serves as the school’s primary instructional leader and is responsible for the administration and supervision of the elementary school and its programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Develops and maintains an effective educational program consistent with state and federal guidelines and the mission, vision and strategic plan of the Henry County School Board. Develops and maintains effective communications with students, parents, faculty and staff. Employs research-based processes for gathering, analyzing and using data to make decisions regarding instruction. Ensures effective implementation of the HCPS Teaching & Learning Framework. Directs, monitors and supervises implementation of the instructional program and ensures that instructional staff are employing best practices and research-based instructional strategies. Leads and facilitates a results-oriented collaborative learning community. Facilitates the collaborative development, implementation, and ongoing refinement of an appropriate school improvement plan that is aligned with the division’s strategic plan. Creates and maintains a school culture and climate that foster high levels of student and teacher learning and growth. Plans, develops and implements a job-embedded program of professional development for teachers and staff. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local mandates and guidelines related to local and state testing programs and the local special education program. Maintains high standards of student conduct through the implementation of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and enforces discipline as necessary, according to School Board policy and the due process rights of students. Provides for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business. Initiates, designs and implements programs to meet specific needs of the school. Plans, organizes and directs implementation of all school activities. Makes recommendations to the central administrative leadership team concerning the school's administration and instruction. Develops the school’s budget, ensuring alignment with instructional and building needs and priorities; complies with all fiscal controls; monitors expenditures. Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board policies and regulations by the school's staff and students; interprets and enforces school division policies and regulations. Coordinates and works with the central office administrative staff to address school issues. Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records and all other required information and data. Schedules classes within established guidelines to meet students’ needs. Directs special education programs within the school, ensuring IEP’s are properly implemented, the special education timeline is followed, special education records are accurate and special needs students are provided an appropriate education and learning environment. Attends special events held to recognize student achievement; attends school sponsored activities and functions; maintains and controls the various local funds generated by student activities. Selects and supervises building-level personnel. Evaluates, monitors, supports, mentors and counsels staff members regarding their performance, professional growth and learning. Supervises the maintenance and accuracy of student attendance records. Supervises the daily use of school facilities for both academic and nonacademic purposes. Maintains and models high standards of professionalism. Maintains records and files; prepares reports. Performs other duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all facets of an elementary school; thorough knowledge of curriculum design, implementation, evaluation and refinement; thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures; knowledge and understanding of student growth and development; knowledge and understanding of the conditions and dynamics of the diverse school community; skill in oral and written communications; ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, students, parents, teachers, support staff, associates and the community; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to set expectations, build capacity
