Description The Environmental Scientist I performs data collection independently or as part of a team and uses the data to compile field reports with minimal supervision. The Environmental Scientist I will assist with drafting various permit packages. The Environmental Scientist will assist and mentor junior staff or interns. This position will perform a mix of the duties in a field setting and in an office setting. ACTIVITIES + RESPONSIBILITIES: Intermediate knowledge of field sampling procedures and equipment. Ability to collect multiple data sets via GPS. Complete field data sheets with minimal oversight. Willingness to be trained on GIS and the development of maps for wetland delineation and permits. Independently operate and assist with maintaining all equipment used regularly for fieldwork. Understands sampling procedures and follows appropriate standards operating procedures. Intermediate knowledge of reviewing and interpreting field maps, design plans, and project-specific technical documents. Understands and implements safety protocols. Intermediate knowledge of relevant software specific to scientific analysis. Ability to perform a functional assessment and/or appropriate data calculations with minimal supervision. Capable of writing technical reports with minimal supervision. Understands the process of site selection and evaluation based on regulatory/technical requirements and constraints. Advanced knowledge of one of the following and intermediate knowledge of a few: local and regional flora and fauna, hydrology, geological conditions, threatened and endangered species, soils, wetlands, stream morphology, water quality, environmental contamination, geology, ecology, biology, fisheries, and/or similar scientific disciplines. Has an intermediate knowledge and willingness to learn regional regulatory requirements, permits, and rules/conditions. Capable of communicating vital project information to the field team and ensuring issues are documented and reported to the Project Team(s) timely. Works as part of a team and may have some field team leadership capabilities. Able to evaluate project needs and schedules communicated by team leads. Capable of remaining on schedule or communicating project delays. Understand how to read a project budget and a project schedule under moderate supervision. Draft and compile basic permit documents and reports along with supporting information under moderate supervision. Ensure the information provided is complete, accurate, and meets the requirements of applicable regulatory agencies. Independently accesses state and federal databases and has knowledge of what information needs to be extracted from the state and federal databases to complete assigned task(s). Enter data into relevant system(s) using excel or other general data collection systems. Interpret and communicate results of researched or collected data with moderate assistance. Basic understanding of restoration design principles, approaches and supporting technical information such as engineering design plans, functional calculations, and ecological data. Ability to communicate this information in written project deliverables with support from the project team. Read and interpret project maps and design plans and extracts information from these documents to support permitting/regulatory deliverables with moderate oversight. Independently draft, finalize and deliver a PowerPoint or similar program and prepare for or participate in regulatory meetings to support the project team. Communicate or attend meetings with clients, local, state, and federal agencies, and stakeholders on their projects at the direction and supervision of the Project Lead. Participate in field site assessments. Assist with developing risk assessments for a Project. Assist the Project Team with due diligence activities. Assist with the development of proposals, project scopes, budget, and schedule. Performs basic project management functions as designated by Supervisor. Maintain and assist with establishing Project folders and ensure they are current. Ability to QA/QC documents as assigned.
