Job Description:Gardener 2026-27 About Living Classroom Join an organization of passionate, self-starting educators and garden professionals that make learning come alive and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.You will be helping to make an impact on student learning as Living Classroom expands and grows, continuing our mission of providing engaging, hands-on lessons that stimulate curiosity.Living Classroom's mission is to inspire children to learn about and value the natural world through garden-based education.About this Position:This role manages and supports garden activities at locations that have a contract with Living Classroom.The Gardener works independently to successfully maintain and seasonally plant garden sites that are under the supervision of Living Classroom (LC).Additionally, the Gardener works collaboratively with other LC stakeholders, including the Garden lead, Program Director, Instructors and other staff, to complete LC program objectives.Onsite, the Gardener serves as an ambassador for the program, answering questions and fostering the interest of students, teachers, administrators, and parents at the program's sites.Job Description:Gardener Job title:Gardener Reports to:Living Classroom Program Director/Garden Lead Compensation:Hourly; $26 per hour Hours:Part time; not to exceed 20 hrs per week/48 weeks per year Location:Supporting Living Classroom school garden sites, Mountain View Whisman School District /Sunnyvale Elementary School District Start of Employment:Negotiable; August, 2026 Responsibilities:Key work tasks will include, but not be limited to:? Routine maintenance tasks for native habitat and edible gardens at multiple school campuses including:? Irrigation management and repair ? Soil enhancement (amending the soil with organic compost) ? Pest management ? Pruning - Weeding - Replanting native plants as needed to replace dead plants - Installing interpretive signs ? Other maintenance / repairs as needed ? Prepare beds for LC lesson-directed plantings where appropriate.? Purchase seedlings, plants and other garden supplies to prepare for lessons.Label seedlings for lessons.? Provide support for any garden beautification, community building or related volunteer events, in collaboration with Program Director and Garden Lead.Hours worked shall be compensated at regular pay and be included as part of total hours worked for that week, not to exceed contracted hours unless approved by the Executive Director.? Grow extra seasonal, edible produce for school district distribution or donation to local food banks Qualifications:? Background or experience managing different types of garden environments throughout the annual seasonal cycle including native plants and vegetables and fruits.? Familiarity with vegetation native to the San Francisco peninsula.Also familiar with edible gardening and the food safety requirements of produce grown for public consumption.? Enthusiasm for nature-based instruction and a desire to contribute to children's understanding of the natural world.? Ability to work independently and without supervision.? Good judgment and problem solving abilities.? Good communication skills.? Ability to collaborate with co-workers to address issues in a timely fashion as well as school maintenance staff.?
