THE CURRENT VACANCY IS WITHIN THE SHASTA COUNTY PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT ORAL EXAM IS TENTATIVELY SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 2026 SEE SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS SECTION REGARDING POSSESSION OF A VALID DRIVER'S LICENSE RESPONSES TO SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS REQUIRED FINAL FILING DATE:FEBRUARY 06, 2026, AT 12:00 PM SALARY INFORMATION $17.77 - $22.68 APPROXIMATE HOURLY Extra help positions are hourly employees that may work up to 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).Benefits are not included.ABOUT SHASTA COUNTY Shasta County offers all of the amenities of the big city while retaining a comfortable small-town atmosphere.With its natural beauty, affordable housing, excellent educational system, abundance of recreational opportunities, and excellent quality of life, Shasta County is a great place to live, work, and raise a family.ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The Public Works Department is responsible for construction and maintenance of County facilities, including buildings, roads, bridges, and airports; and for managing permanent road divisions to provide maintenance of private roads on behalf of the citizens in those districts.The department employs engineers and technicians who prepare construction plans as well as supervise construction of these facilities.The responsibilities of County Surveyor, Road Commissioner and Chief Engineer of the Water Agency are administered by the department.The department reviews land development maps and improvement plans as well as survey mapping for compliance with the Subdivision Map Act and County Development Standards.Administration of the County's solid waste management functions including waste collection and ownership of an active landfill are the responsibility of the department.The County water agency is managed by the department.In addition, the Public Works Department oversees the operation and maintenance of several County service areas.These service areas include both water and sewer districts along with road, lighting, and flood maintenance districts.The department is responsible for Flood Plain Administration.The Roads Division of the Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining about 1,200 miles of County roadways and associated structures.The budget unit for Roads is funded solely from federal and state sources.The Facilities Management Division of Public Works provides for the maintenance, repair, and minor renovation of County buildings, parks, and grounds.In addition, the division also provides maintenance, custodial, and landscape services.Fleet Management is responsible for maintaining and repairing a fleet of more than 375 County vehicles.Additionally, Fleet Management works closely with the Purchasing Unit within the Department of Support Services on buying new and replacement vehicles for the fleet.The County has a vehicle replacement program designed to keep the fleet modern and in safe working condition.ABOUT THE POSITION Under close supervision, may perform unskilled or semi-skilled manual, clerical or laboratory work; may assist in studies and prepare written reports; and perform related work as required.May serve in various assignments in a variety of departments.IDEAL CANDIDATE The candidate will have had working experience outdoors, be a good driver, and can follow any training provided by the department, performing the duty of traffic control.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is an extra help classification performing a variety of routine support duties for various departments.May assist professional, paraprofessional and technical employees in the performance of their duties.May perform elements of these duties under close supervision.May serve as a training platform for students and others with temporary employment.Incumbents may receive on-the-job instruction and perform work that will provide practical experience in their desired profession or field of study.EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:Receives instructions from staff members and applies knowledge to work situations; learns departmental policies, procedures and methods of operation; assists in the collection and analysis of data, prepares charts and reports; participates in case work and studies and prepares reports under close supervision; drives a vehicle; performs incidental manual labor.Specific positions may include:Traffic Control Worker:Provides temporary traffic control for work zones within County right-of-way; performs flagging duties; drives pilot vehicle; receives and communicates specific instructions, clearly, firmly, and courteously; is able to move and maneuver quickly; is able to control signaling devices, such as flags and paddles, to provide clear and positive guidance to motorists; understands and applies safe traffic control practices, sometimes in stressful or emergency situations; and recognizes dangerous traffic situations and warns workers in sufficient time to avoid injury.Traffic Control Workers will be req
