LOCATIONS: Jefferson County TARGET CLOSE DATE: 05/22/2026 PAY GRADE: Grade 22 TYPE: Full time JOB SUMMARY: Jefferson County is seeking a well-qualified Geographic Information Systems Technician II for its Tax Assessor's Office Birmingham. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technicians II create, verify, and edit a geographic information system (GIS) database using specialized software for tax mapping, voter registration, addressing, engineering, or legal descriptions and providing support for special projects that relate to spatial, demographic, or tabular data contained in GIS. GIS Technicians (II) produce work products, such as digital maps and databases, that are used for a variety of different departments, such as tax assessment and collection, zoning, 911 system information and maintaining voting districts. GIS Technicians (II) rely on knowledge of computer techniques of engineering drafting using AutoCAD or other related software to perform the main functions of their job. GIS Technicians (II) work independently as well as part of a team of GIS workers and may have some interaction with the public. GIS Technicians (II) work under the direction of a supervisor and work is reviewed through use of production reports for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to policies and procedures. The work of a GIS Technician II is performed indoors in an office setting an may require some physical tasks such as sitting, standing or lifting. The pay range for this job is presented below: $55,265 - $81,640 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position: Option A Prior experience within the merit system as a GIS Tech I Option B: GIS certificate OR Associate's degree or higher in the areas of Geographical Information Systems Option C: Experience editing and/or maintaining a database (e.g., Access, MondoDB, tSQL, MS SQL) AND Experience editing and/or maintaining GIS system (e.g., MapInfo, ESRI) TARGETED QUALIFICATIONS: The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by Jefferson County. These qualifications may be considered by the department when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection process. Experience creating maps to include map elements (e.g., scale, legend, title, disclaimer, north arrow, direction, orientation. Experience editing and/or maintaining GIS system using ESRI Fabric. TYPICAL JOB DUTIES: Creates GIS maps by designing and replicating graphic representations of GIS data provided by hard-copy maps, deed descriptions, blueprints and various other sources using GIS editing software or hand-drawing to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the content entered into GIS database. Maintains GIS database content by editing content, updating existing or incoming data, researching information and verifying GIS database submissions prior to input using GIS editing software or hand-drawing in order to ensure the accuracy of the content entered. Conducts research related to GIS information by reading deeds, reviewing information for proof of ownership, contacting various individuals, departments or agencies, and conducting site visits in order to determine the accuracy and validity of the request before the information/data is entered into the GIS database. Assists various stakeholders (e.g., employees, governmental agencies, the general public) by drafting correspondence related to GIS activities, handling the sale of maps and responding to inquiries in order to address requests for mapping services and information. Creates reports related to GIS activities by verifying and/or editing GIS data and transposing the information into the appropriate documentation to meet the needs of the department or municipality making the request. Maintains the County's voter database by designating voting districts and ensuring voters are assigned to their correct district to assist with the election process. Performs general maintenance on GIS hardware and software by troubleshooting and repairing equipment and making software/hardware updates in accordance with manufacturer
