Position Description Final Filing Date:Monday, February 23, 2026 Exam#:26/34X21/02MZ The County of Monterey is committed to honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans and eligible military spouses and awards veterans' preference points for this recruitment.To learn more about the eligibility requirements and the process, be sure to read the Hiring Preference for Veterans and Eligible Military Spouses section located towards the end of this job flier.The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department (PWFP) brings together a range of functions to ensure safe building construction, plan for the future needs of the County, manage infrastructure and county facilities, and protect natural resources.The Department is responsible for public works, county roads and bridges, county parks, and county facilities.The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department seeks to fill the current Guard (Litter Control) vacancy.The Guard classification supports the Operations and Maintenance division.Under general supervision/ guards/ controls, incumbents in this classification are responsible for supervising the activities of inmates performing a variety of unskilled manual tasks; transporting inmates to and from various locations; and maintaining security and discipline.The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used County-wide to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis.Examples of Duties Guards, controls and supervises the activities of inmates from the rehabilitation facility, and individuals from court work alternate programs and alcohol rehabilitation programs in litter control activities and other unskilled manual tasks.Drives a truck to pick up and transport crew to work site; returns crews to the rehabilitation facility; maintains and exercises verbal security and custodial control over inmates.Observes the work area and conditions throughout the day to ensure a safe job site; maintains radio contact with the Public Works Department.May perform some unskilled manual labor.Completes timecards, labor and equipment records; maintains daily work logs which document work completed and other records.Solve minor problems among inmates; returns uncooperative inmates to the rehabilitation facility.To view the complete classification description, please visit the County of Monterey website:Guard.THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:Some knowledge of:Basic math sufficient to keep time cards and work records.Skill and Ability to:Skill to safely drive a truck, pickup or van with a manual transmission while pulling a trailer.Supervise and control a group of inmates and maintain security and discipline.Develop and maintain an effective relationship with departmental personnel, law enforcement, individuals assigned to the crew and the general public.Think quickly and clearly to adopt an effective and reasonable course of action under adverse and/or emergency conditions.Understand and follow oral directions.Write English at a level sufficient to complete basic time and equipment records.Read English at a level sufficient to follow written instructions, read maps and forms.Communicate orally with all age, social, educational level and ethnic groups.Examples of Experience/Education/Training Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying.An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:Experience:One year of experience working as a security guard with responsibility for the supervision and safety of others.Additional Information REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following:Successfully pass a thorough background investigation Possess a valid California Class C driver license at the time of appointment and possess and maintain a satisfactory driving record or provide evidence of suitable transportation which is approved by the appointing authority.Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency; travel out of County to attend meetings.Benefits:The County of Monterey offers an excellent benefits package.Please visit our website to view the J Unit Benefit Summary Sheet.This information is not legally binding, nor does it serve as a contract.The benefits listed in the Monterey County Personnel Policies and Practices Resolution or Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) prevail over this listing.NOTES:As a condition of employment, prospective employees may be required to submit to a background review which may include a review of information concerning present and/or prior employment, driving record, and record of any criminal convictions.Employment is contingent upon acceptable documentation verifying iden
