Canaan School DistrictJob DescriptionJOB TITLE: K-12 School CounselorFLSA STATUS: UPDATED: August 20, 2019POSITION OBJECTIVESThe K-12 School Counselor is the administrator responsible for the high school guidance and counseling program including: student academic advising, consultation, and coordination; personal counseling and referral; college and career advising; management of student academic records; the guidance curriculum; and counselor professional development.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESSCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM MANAGEMENTPrepares and administers the School Counseling budgetAssumes responsibility for own professional development; for keeping current with the literature, new research findings, and improved techniquesCollaborates with administrators, department heads, teachers, and other school personnel to share information about and understanding of studentsEstablishes effective liaison with the various offices and agencies within the school and community that may provide specialized or professional help to students and their parents, serves on appropriate advisory committees, and acts as the referral agent to these offices and agenciesDevelops and coordinates school counseling program (curriculum) activities such as Program of Studies4-year planning meetings with freshman, career planning classes with sophomores, college planning classes with juniors and seniors, VSAC Financial Aid Night, Senior College Night for Parents, College Information Night for juniors and their parents, Curriculum Orientation Night for the Parents of Incoming Freshmen and New Students, etc.Prepares daily announcements, local newspaper notices and reminders to students and teachers concerning standardized testing, scheduling, and other guidance and counseling related events and deadlinesActs as the liaison for the Northern Vermont University Upward Bound ProgramCoordinates with area middle schools for the smooth transition of students to the High SchoolOversees the determination of nominations and recipients for awards and scholarships given by outside organizations but chosen by the schoolAssists in identifying and nominating CSD students for a wide variety of local, regional, and national scholarship and financial opportunitiesNew Hampshire Gear Up Coordinator for Stewartstown, NH Tuition StudentsCoordinates with administration academic student enrichment experiences (i.e., Governors Institute)Aids in planning for motivational speakers for entire school to help meet student needs in the area of self-esteem, bullying, safety, etc.TESTINGCoordinates the administration of (and proctors) the PSAT/NMSQT, ACT, and SAT, etc. assessmentsCoordinates the administration of (and proctors) and prepares annual reports on the Advanced Placement examinations, local and state assessments, MAP, SBAC, etc.Coordinates ASVAB activities including testing and reviewing results with students for career planning.CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATIONActs as the liaison between the high school and technical centers for studentsAbility to plan, implement and evaluate work-based learning programsProvide individual student support services and facilitate development of activities related to career awareness, exploration, and preparationMatch and place students to appropriate work-based learning activities, ensure necessary accommodations and equitable access in order to meet students unique learning needsEvaluate student progress by collecting and sharing feedback from work-based mentor on student performance in order to address deficient areasDevelop formal work-based learning plans for students in partnership with the student, family, academic teachers and special educators (as applicable), and work site supervisorMaintain program regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal wage, hour, and safety laws, especially those related to child labor, training, and risk management policiesMaintain database of students, industry recognized credentials (keeping copies of certifications on file), career/college activities after high school for state reporting (VT and NH)Interface with post-secondary institutions to coordinate programs, develop articulation agreements, implement dual credit opportunities and expand the opportunities for all learners to access appropriate learning opportunitiesConsult with teachers, administrators, local advisory committee members, industrial leaders and other groups to determine program effectiveness, changing needs, and projected needsCoordinates public relations activities for the CTE Center; including news releases, media presentations, open houses, and other special eventsPERSONALIZED LEARNING PLANSSchedule time with students, parents, teachers and/or administrators to identify individual student career interests.Establish and maintain Personalized Learning Plan forms for all students in grades 7-12 and work with students to identify proper course sequence.COURSE SELECTION AND SCHEDULINGAdminis
