Job Description
JOB Under the general direction of the Youth Program Supervisor, the Head Recreation Counselor oversees daily operations of the City’s before and after school and summer camp programs. This position provides leadership and guidance to Junior Recreation Counselors, ensures the safety and engagement of program participants, and delivers a positive experience for all patrons. Work involves responsibility for supervision, coordination of daily activities, and direct interaction with children, parents, and staff. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Supervise, train, and support Recreation Counselors in daily operations.Lead and actively participate in the delivery of engaging, age-appropriate recreation, arts, crafts, and athletic activities.Monitor group and individual behavior to ensure participant safety and adherence to program expectations.Serve as the primary on-site contact for parents and guardians; communicate daily updates, concerns, and incidents professionally and promptly.Ensure compliance with all department policies, state laws, safety protocols, and accreditation standards.Maintain accurate attendance records, incident reports, and communication logs.Assist in planning and implementing seasonal program schedules, special events, and field trips.Perform facility and equipment checks to maintain a safe and clean environment.Provide leadership during emergency situations and administer first aid or CPR as needed.Support the Youth Program Supervisor with performance feedback for team members.Attend staff meetings required and assist with in-service training sessions.Foster teamwork and cooperation among recreation, parks, library, and other City departments. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Work Schedule: Permanent Part-Time at 29 hours per weekHours: Mainly Monday-Friday,6:45-8:30 AM and 2:00-6:00 PM through school year, hours vary in the summer. Physical, Mental, & Environmental RequirementsAbility to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently. Must have the physical ability to supervise activities in various indoor and outdoor environments, including uneven terrain. Ability to stand, walk, climb, stoop, kneel, lift, and participate in recreational activities for extended periods. Must possess judgment, stamina, and coordination to complete assigned tasks. Position requires exposure to both inside and outside environmental conditions and variable noise levels.
