Position Summary The Health Officer is responsible for the daily oversight of campers and staff health. This position will provide emergency assistance for instances that need a higher level of first aid training. This position is on call and on site for the duration of summer camp. To oversee the health and safety of the camp population in a manner consistent with State of Michigan Licensing Rules, GSUSA Guidelines, and GSSEM safety activity checkpoints. Key Responsibilities: To incorporate opportunities for teaching courage, confidence, and character during daily interaction with campers and staff. Establish and maintain a camp infirmary that is equipped with necessary equipment and supplies. Review and systematically file all incoming staff and camper health forms. Review camper information and share pertinent information regarding existing medical conditions and necessary precautions with staff that have direct responsibility for the camper. Collect incoming prescription & overthecounter medications from campers and staff and ensure that they are dispensed in a manner consistent with required instructions. Be familiar with all “standing medical orders” as written by the camp physician. Act decisively and competently in medical emergencies and make appropriate decisions regarding outside treatment. Maintains contact with the camp physician and local hospital facilities, as needed. Takes responsibility for calling the camp doctor’s office and/or hospital as needed for camper and staff health concerns. Establishes and maintains regular infirmary hours. Notify the director of camps when parents should be advised of serious illness or accident. Cleans and organizes the infirmary at the start and end of camp. Carries out daily cleaning, sanitizing, and maintenance of the infirmary. Assists in implementation of the rules of State of Michigan Licensing Guidelines, County Health Department, and GSUSA. Provide nightly “oncall” assistance to units and respond to emergencies as needed. Always be available to campers and staff during duty hours. File incident/accident reports promptly. Assemble and restock first aid kits for units and activity areas. Provide instruction for all staff during the precamp training period related to bloodborne pathogens and required precautions and procedures. Maintains appropriate communication with camper’s guardians either by phone, in person, or through written documents to inform camper’s families about any extended stays in the infirmary, or medical concerns that may require follow up, or higher medical care. Give instructions in health and safety and first aid to staff and campers as requested and when deemed appropriate. Works with the Director of Camps to maintain a schedule for the infirmary, medication distribution, and other duties as assigned. Manages the camp infirmary including administering medication to campers and staff, treating medical needs within level of training, reporting all treatments, while following state regulations and best practices. Maintains health records, certificates, records of treatment, medication logs, and other health information in an organized, up to date and confidential manner. Modeling proper behaviors and practices to promote the health and safety of all campers and staff. Other duties as assigned. Essential Requirements: This position requires registration as a member of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. Hold the minimum of current license as a physician, physician’s assistant, RN, LPN, EMT, paramedic, OR hold American Red Cross certification in both “Responding to Emergencies” AND “CPR for the Professional Rescuer.” Equipment Used: Medical equipment including basic first aid supplies, biohazard disposal equipment, thermometers, iPad. Physical Activities: Typing, reaching, talking, hearing, bending, stooping and repetitive motions, driving and riding in car or van Physical Demands: Sitting and standing for long periods of time (2-3 hours), ability to maneuver across camp property to respond to camper medical needs. Run short distances (under one mile.) Walk 2-3 miles in a day. Operating equipment listed above. Ability to lift 20 pounds. Software: Microsoft Office Suite; Microsoft Outlook or equivalent calendaring systems, CampDocs Work Conditions: Activities occur both in an indoor and outdoor environment.
