Job Description Nashville or Knoxville, TN Join CDM Smith’s Tennessee Transportation team and play a key role in delivering impactful state and municipal roadway projects throughout Tennessee and the broader Southeast. This position is ideal for an experienced roadway engineer who enjoys hands‑on design work, technical leadership, and collaboration with public agency clients. You’ll work alongside a highly respected team supporting TDOT and municipal clients, delivering projects from planning and design development through final PS&E and construction support. What You’ll Do Perform Hands-on Roadway And Highway Design, Including In this role, you will lead and support the technical delivery of highway and roadway design projects, with responsibilities that include: Interchange and corridor improvements. Roadway widening and rehabilitation projects. Roundabout and superstreet design. Low-impact bridge replacement and roadway tie-ins. Develop construction bid-ready plan sets and contract documents, including plans, profiles, cross sections, details, and quantities. Prepare roadway design reports, functional design reports, and technical memorandums in accordance with TDOT and municipal standards. Develop engineer’s construction cost estimates and assist with the preparation of technical specifications and special provisions. Utilize OpenRoads Designer and MicroStation, including corridor modeling, to produce efficient, high-quality model-based roadway designs. Coordinate closely with TDOT, municipalities, and other project stakeholders to support design reviews, incorporate agency comments, and advance projects through approval. Collaborate with internal disciplines such as traffic, drainage, structures, right-of-way, and utilities to ensure coordinated and constructible designs. Provide construction-phase support, including responses to RFIs and design clarifications as needed. Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and training to junior staff, including reviewing work products for quality, accuracy, and adherence to standards. Contribute to a positive team environment while helping uphold consistent technical standards across projects. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil, Transportation, or Structural Engineering or related discipline. Certification as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam in states where an EIT is not obtainable (within 18 months of hire or promotion or transfer). 5 years of related experience. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with TDOT roadway design standards; municipal roadway experience is a strong plus. OpenRoads Designer experience, including corridor modeling workflows. Proficiency with MicroStation for plan development and production. Experience developing construction bid documents for TDOT and/or municipal clients. Experience Preparing Technical Documentation, Including Design reports and functional design reports. Project special provisions. Technical memorandums and supporting calculations. Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with clients and project teams. Experience reviewing and mentoring junior engineers and contributing to team technical development. Amount Of Travel Required 5% S
