Western Groundworks LLC is hiring an experienced Horizontal Directional Drill Operator / HDD Driller for underground fiber optic and utility construction projects in the Austin, TX area. This position is for a local Austin-area field crew. Work includes operating directional drilling equipment, installing underground conduit, supporting fiber optic construction, completing bores, assisting with job site setup, and working safely around existing utilities and live fiber infrastructure. This is an in-person field construction position. Applicants must live within daily commuting distance of Austin, TX. Per diem and lodging are not provided for this position. This role is part of a 4-man underground fiber construction crew and may work alongside a locator, CDL driver/laborer, and utility laborer. The project plans include directional bores, open trench, conduit installation, vault/handhole work, hydro-vac, air spade, restoration, ROW work, and safety around existing live fiber facilities. Responsibilities Operate horizontal directional drilling equipment for underground fiber/conduit installation Complete directional bores according to project plans and field conditions Work closely with the HDD locator to maintain proper bore path, depth, and alignment Assist with setup, drilling, pullback, conduit placement, and cleanup Read and follow basic construction drawings, bore paths, and utility markings Help identify and avoid existing utilities, live fiber, water lines, gas, electric, and other underground facilities Support open trench, vault, handhole, and conduit installation when needed Inspect equipment before and after use Communicate with crew members, supervisors, and project contacts Maintain a safe and clean job site Assist with restoration of work areas after construction Follow company safety procedures and customer/project requirements Experience Preferred 1–3 years of HDD / directional drilling experience preferred Experience with fiber optic, telecom, underground utility, or conduit installation preferred Experience operating Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar HDD equipment is a plus Experience with street crossings, ROW work, and residential utility areas is a plus Ability to work around existing utilities and follow safe digging practices CDL is a plus but not required Requirements Must have experience operating directional drilling equipment Must be dependable and show up on time Must be able to work outdoors in heat, weather, and active construction areas Must be able to lift 50+ lbs when needed Must be able to follow instructions and work as part of a crew Must have reliable transportation to Austin-area job sites Valid driver’s license preferred Must live within daily commuting distance of Austin, TX Schedule Full-time Monday to Friday Some weekends may be required depending on project schedule Overtime may be available Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour Work Location: In person
