Click here to learn more about our full benefits package JOB SUMMARY The Lab Assistant is responsible for obtaining a variety of specimens from patients of all ages using a variety of collection techniques. This position is responsible for performing limited testing, processing send out specimens, maintaining and receiving supplies. This position is responsible for greeting and/or checking in patients. The Lab Assistant performs quality control, preventative maintenance, trains new employees, takes part in continuing education and maintains positive interpersonal relationships. Assists in developing department policies and procedures. In the Laboratory, this position works under the supervision of the Lab Manager and Lab Supervisors. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs positive patient identification. Labels specimens appropriately and completely. Obtains adequate blood specimens in a timely manner without undue stress or injury to the patient while adhering to universal precautions procedures. Perform collection of blood specimens are collected by venous, PIVO needle free, and/or capillary puncture on: Newborn Patients Infant Patients Children - Teenage Patients Adult Patients Geriatric Patients Emergency Care Patients Urgent Care Patients Dialysis Patients Oncology Patients Surgical / Operating Room Patients Pre-operative In-operative Post-operative Obstetrical patients Nursery Intensive Care In-patients Medical/Surgical In-patients Intensive Care In-patients Perform Therapeutic Phlebotomy blood draws on patients of all ages Perform blood culture collection on patients with practices preventing contamination Perform collection of throat, nasal and nasopharyngeal specimens Transcribes and enters physicians orders and coordinates result handling. Accurately and efficiently uses all computer programs. Models excellent customer service as first impression of the department. Functions as a primary communication resource for the department including greetings and/or checking in patients. Coordinates tests and procedures and provides instruction to patients on specimen collection. Processes specimens for send out to reference laboratory. Performs legal collection of urine, buccal, specimens. Performs point of care testing and handles results according to departmental policy. Performs CLIA Waived testing Performs microbiology set-ups of cultures and other bodily fluids or specimens. Maintains, operates and serves as a specimen handler on pre-analytical lab automation analyzer Load specimens on the following instruments: Urinalysis, Hematology, and Pre-analytical Chemistry Line (8100) Monitors par levels and orders supplies as needed. Receives supplies and delivers to appropriate departments. Contributes to department budget by being fiscally sound and encourages cost savings for departments and organizations. Helps ensure Infection Control measures by utilizing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment and hand washing and performs routine cleaning tasks utilizing department daily check list Maintains a clean and orderly work environment. Trains new employees, participates in department education, review of manuals, and SQM. Maintains positive relationships with internal and external customers. Conducts review of patient medical records as needed. Complies with the hospitals Corporate Compliance Program including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, laws and regulations, and hospital policies and procedures.
