Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY: Provides operational leadership and support for clinical laboratory services under the direction of the CLIA Laboratory Director. Oversight includes hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology testing as well as phlebotomy. Regulatory Compliance & Technical Oversight Performs CLIA Technical Consultant functions as delegated by the CLIA Laboratory Director, ensuring compliance with all applicable CLIA regulations and accreditation standards Maintains and updates laboratory policies and procedures to ensure continuous compliance with CLIA and other regulatory requirements Monitors the accuracy and reliability of testing methods performed in the laboratory, ensuring compliance with quality assurance standards Ensures that routine calibration, preventative maintenance, and repair of laboratory equipment are completed in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and are properly documented Reviews laboratory orders for operational compliance, including billing, diagnosis coding, and other regulatory requirements, escalating issues as appropriate Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement Coordinates and supports laboratory quality assurance and improvement programs, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations Identifies, documents, and assists in the investigation and resolution of quality deficiencies within laboratory services, collaborating with the CLIA Laboratory Director to implement corrective actions Monitors and reports on quality indicators, supporting ongoing efforts to improve laboratory processes and patient care Staff Leadership & Workforce Management Hires, trains, and directly supervises laboratory personnel to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, as well as CLIA competency requirements Oversees staff scheduling to ensure adequate coverage and alignment with clinical and operational needs Manages staff performance, including coaching, competency assessments, and adherence to laboratory policies, procedures, and regulatory standards Coordinates and leads continuing education, competency assessments, and training programs for laboratory staff to support compliance with regulatory and professional development standards Operational Management Supports the evaluation, selection, and implementation of laboratory methods, procedures, and equipment, providing input on accuracy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness Ensures efficient laboratory workflows and alignment with clinical operations, functioning as a liaison between laboratory and clinical departments Identifies and implements operational improvements to increase productivity and maintain quality care Technical Responsibilities Maintains technical proficiency and performs laboratory testing as needed to ensure continuity of operations and patient care, including testing in areas such as: Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Immunology, Microbiology, Phlebotomy Provides direct patient care and laboratory staffing support as needed to ensure smooth operational flow and maintain quality care delivery. Financial Responsibilities Collaborates with the CLIA Laboratory Director on the development and management of the laboratory budget, ensuring financial sustainability within departmental goals Oversees inventory management, ensuring adherence to budgetary constraints and financial targets Reviews financial statements, invoices, and service contracts for laboratory supplies and services to maintain budget compliance Maintains an understanding of revenue cycle processes, including billing, insurance, and coding workflows related to laboratory services Safety & Compliance Develops, implements, and ensures compliance with laboratory safety procedures, meeting all OSHA regulations and CLIA standards Provides safety training and maintains documentation to meet regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance across the laboratory team Maintains and updates the laboratory safety manual, ensuring that safety procedures align with current regulations Coordinates safety-related incident reviews, ensuring appropriate documentation, corrective actions, and follow-up QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Work Experience: Minimum of 8 years laboratory training or experience in non-waived testing and 2 years of supervisory laboratory experience in non-waived testing.
