Job Description
Job Responsibilities Reporting to the Director of the Macfeat Early Childhood Laboratory School, the Lead Teacher meets the needs of a diverse population of learners ages 3 to 5 years in full- and half-day programs and supports through demonstration teaching, supervision, and mentoring the development of preservice teachers enrolled in the college’s early childhood education and related programs. Provides instruction to early childhood–aged children in a full-day school environment by planning and implementing innovative, individualized curriculum that actively engages students in culturally responsive, developmentally appropriate, and academically meaningful learning experiences. Builds and maintains effective communication with families through key transition updates, student performance data, classroom newsletters and electronic communication tools. Collaborates with the school director, faculty, and staff to support school requirements, including goal setting, accreditation, curriculum, and other regulations. Maintains Department of Social Services regulations. Engages in faculty meetings. Participates in professional development and collaborative research. Mentors university students assigned to the classroom as part of field experiences associated with university coursework. Supervises and assists in the professional development of graduate and undergraduate students employed by the laboratory school. Minimum and Additional Requirements Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, early childhood special education, elementary education, or child development; a bachelor’s degree with at least 36 higher education credits in one of those fields; or a bachelor’s degree with state teacher certification that reflects the age of the children served. Successful teaching experience with children ages 3, 4, or 5 years. Knowledge of early childhood development and ability to successfully teach diverse children ages 3 to 5 years; Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate and communicate relevance of current issues and trends in early childhood education. Exceptional interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills; Ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with families; Ability to collaborate with colleagues at the department, college, university, and community levels; and Ability to communicate well with diverse undergraduate and graduate students and support their professional development. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in early childhood education, early childhood special education, elementary education, child development, or closely related field; Teacher licensure or certification in early childhood education, early childhood special education, or elementary education; At least three to five years of successful teaching experience; and Knowledge of state DSS childcare licensing and regulations.
