POSITION SUMMARY The Part-Time Library Associate – Patron Experience provides excellent customer service by assisting library patrons with circulation services, account help, finding library resources, answering general questions, and providing basic technology assistance. Promptly processes library materials to ensure patron access and accuracy of records. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS Reports to: Library Supervisor - Patron Experience Direct Reports: None DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The listed examples of work are not intended to be all-inclusive. Customer Service (80%) Delivers circulation services, including issuing new cards and using the integrated library system (Sierra) to check materials in and out. Prepares items accurately to fulfill patron holds and for return to partner libraries. Provides basic library information, technology assistance, referrals and reader’s advisory guidance to patrons. May occasionally assist with development and delivery of library programs. Uses high-level customer service skills to determine and respond to patron needs. Creates a positive inviting atmosphere for all patrons. Addresses and resolves complaints from patrons or forwards to appropriate staff as necessary. Collection Maintenance (10%) Creates inviting displays of library materials and may develop thematic lists of books and other resources Ensures accuracy of database by updating location codes and item status as needed. Assists with evaluating and maintaining the existing collection through recommendations and weeding materials in accordance with established guidelines. Assists with local shelving of returned materials. Operational Support (10%) Participates in the responsibility for the general appearance and safety of the Library as a whole. Assists in opening and closing procedures. Keeps current on Library policies and procedures. Monitors adherence to policies and procedures and/or communicates policies to patrons as necessary. Stays current on new trends and technologies in library service. Stays aware of library services and programs as well as current activities of the department and City. May collect, tabulate, maintain data and prepare standardized reports. May work directly with volunteers. PREPARATION AND TRAINING Education Bachelor’s Degree in any field required. Work Experience 2 years of customer service experience; library and/or bookstore experience preferred. Certifications and/or Licensures None Required Driver’s License None An equivalent combination of education, training and relevant job experience may be substituted. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Working Knowledge Use of general office technology and familiarity with basic library systems Trends in library services, information technology, and publishing Skills & Abilities Communicate with patrons in a professional, friendly and age-appropriate manner Ability to deal with stressful situations with tact and diplomacy Consistently and accurately follow detailed procedures Work productively in a team environment Fluency in Spanish highly valued WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work is performed in a standard library environment, requiring standing for extended periods of time. Work may also be performed in a standard office environment, requiring sitting for extended periods of time. Must be able to perform occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs.). This job requires visual and physical capabilities to work on computers and associated equipment for extended periods of time. HOURLY RATE $22.31 - $33.47/Hourly Rate This is a part-time position.
