Job Description
The City of Portsmouth is seeking 2 reliable individuals to join our team as a Library Page for the Portsmouth Public Library.This part-time position plays a vital role in keeping our library organized, welcoming, and running smoothly for the community.This is a part time position, 7 hours a week at $15 an hour.The schedule is flexible however, afternoon and weekends a required.NATURE OF WORK An individual in this position maintains library organization and the availability of library services by preparing books and other materials for shelving, shelving these items, reading shelves, searching for holds and missing or misplaced items, clearing and straightening up library work areas and preparing facilities for program use.The work requires an understanding of how the library is organized and assisting customers to locate identified items.SUPERVISION Work is performed under the direction of the Assistant Library Director or their designee.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed.The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to, or extension of, the position.1.This position maintains the availability of library materials by preparing and shelving books, media and other materials, reading the shelves and organizing materials into their proper sequence.2.Helps customers locate identified materials and refers customers to other appropriate assistance.3.Transports and arranges library furnishings and equipment and prepares facilities for use in conjunction with various library programs.Restores rooms and/or work locations to an orderly condition following their use.4.Repairs books, cleans media and otherwise assists in maintaining library collections.5.Covers and boxes library materials to prepare them for circulation.6.Gathers returns from the Book Drop for check in.7.Is subject to working evening and weekend hours.EXAMPLES OF OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS 1.Develops a working knowledge about the organization and care of library materials and library services and programs.2.May participate in library outreach on or off library property.3.Performs such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the employee's supervisor.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES An incumbent in this position consistently demonstrates a(n) 1.Ability to independently locate and correctly shelve print, media and other materials.2.Experience and comfort working with the public.3.Working knowledge of library collections, organization, and online card catalog.4.Strong public relations skills.5.Ability to communicate easily and appropriately with the general public, City staff, and government officials at all levels.ENVIRONMENT, WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT Primary duties of this position involve:communicating accurately and effectively with members of the public and staff on a variety of library resources and related items.This includes responding to inquiries and complaints, providing book location information, and assisting customers.Duties will also include organizing print and other materials for display on various high and low shelves, repairing library materials, and transporting office equipment and furniture to its original configuration.Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor library environments which are subject to uncomfortably warm or cool temperatures.Current position includes some limited physical requirements including transporting books, media, and equipment weighing up to 65 pounds.MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Current high school students and those who hold a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) are encouraged to apply.An interest in library services and programs is highly desirable.Experience in a library setting is preferred but not required.(The above descriptions are illustrative.They are intended as guides for personnel actions and are not complete itemizations of all facets of any job.)
