Job Description
Upper Arlington City Schools Position: Licensed School Nurse Location: Hastings Middle School Licensure: Registered Professional Nurse, designated as R.N. as defined and determined by state law, and currently licensed in the state. Reports to: Principal and other designees Employment Status: Full-time FLSA Status: Exempt Description: Plan and implement a comprehensive school health program; create a climate of health and well-being in the school system; assist students to improve or adapt to their health status; participate in the area of health education. NOTE: The lists below are not ranked in order of importance Qualifications Bachelor's degree (B.S.) or equivalent from a four-year college or university One to four years of related experience R.N. licensed by the Ohio Board of Nursing ODE School Nurse license preferred Certification in CPR Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Ability to work effectively with others Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing Effective, active listening skills Organizational and problem-solving skills Knowledge of nursing procedures as covered by Ohio Revised Code 4723.28 and national standards of school nursing practice Ability to work effectively with others General operating knowledge of computers and related software Essential Functions Ensure the safety of students Evaluate symptoms of illness or injury of students or school personnel and recommend appropriate treatment Administer first aid Notify appropriate teachers of student health problems that might be of concern in the classroom Establish and maintain current health and immunization records for all students, as required by state law and the local health department Direct vision, audio, postural screening, and blood pressure screening at designated grade levels, and assist in referring of students needing attention Maintain a health care facility with appropriate medical supplies Assist with periodic inspections of the school environment to identify safety hazards or unsanitary conditions Assist in the control of communicable diseases by supervising the exclusion and readmission of students and school personnel with infections and contagious diseases Dispense medication or delegate according to the Ohio Revised Code with appropriate training, demonstrations, supervision, and evaluation Maintain a record of all accidents/incidents that require medical, dental, or emergency contact Use health care services as a means of providing direct and indirect health teaching Plan and assist school personnel in the classroom instruction of health-related topics Serve as a consultant and resource person to students and school personnel regarding general health information and concerns Assist students in accepting and adjusting positively to their physical, mental, and social limitations in order to maximize their potential Guide families toward self-help in the recognition and solution of physical, mental, emotional, social, and environmental health problems Assist students, parents, and school personnel in the interpretation and understanding of recommendations of health care providers Serve as a liaison person between the school and community health agencies and other community resources Collaborate with other professionals in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and other school health activities Maintain the highest standards of nursing ethics and practice as apply to the school health program Participate in continuing education programs to increase understanding and update professional skills Serve as a consultant to implement innovative school health theory and practice Participate in research to provide the most current and effective school health program Other Duties And Responsibilities Refer students in need of medical and dental care to the proper local agency Provide individual and group health counseling to students and parents Coordinate dental health program and screenings Coordinate and conduct adolescent development and HIV/AIDS education Act as a CPR instructor for staff and students Provide counsel and assistance to teachers in testing and writing IEP's Serve as a role model for students Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner Perform other duties as assigned Equipment Operated Computer Audiometer Sphygmomanometer Vision acuity screen Wheelchair Eye chart Telephone Calculator Copy machine Scales Additional Wor
