Description The Low Vision Ophthalmic Technician, under the direction of the Low Vision Center Director, provides clinical support and general administrative support for the Low Vision Center. Supervisory Responsibilities Not applicable Duties and Responsibilities: Provide clinical support including: Ensure strict compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Secure patient information and maintain patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records, completing diagnostic and procedure coding, and keeping patient information confidential Clean and maintain ophthalmic equipment and low vision devices Obtain complete medical, ophthalmic, social and functional patient histories Educate patients on the purpose and limitations of low vision rehabilitation Provide supportive listening and encourage patients to discuss their vision loss and functional difficulties Guide patients in identifying their main low vision rehabilitation goals and obtain detailed information about each goal Perform preliminary ophthalmic testing, including extraocular movements, confrontation visual fields, contrast sensitivity testing, pupil testing, tonometry, and ocular alignment Operate ophthalmic equipment including the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) for visual field testing as well as the Cirrus Fundus Photo/OCT machine for imaging. Provide technician support and scribe for Optometrist during patient visits Administer eye drops as directed by Optometrist Accurately record all information in the electronic medical records system as directed by Optometrist Provide administrative support including: Photocopy, scan, fax, and label pertinent documents and devices Assist during Low Vision Support Group as needed Assist with the ordering and mailing of materials and devices for the Vision Program Properly record and track device orders and sales in QuickBooks Perform reception duties as needed including answering phone calls, greeting patients, taking payments, and guiding patients in completion of paperwork Perform other administrative and clinical support duties as directed by the Low Vision Director Requirements: Proficient in use of technology Knowledge of ophthalmic medical terminology Exceptional communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Detail-oriented and meticulous Self-motivated with the ability to problem solve, multi-task and work under pressure and at a fast pace Team player who can work in a collaborative environment with a strong sense of purpose and with minimal supervision. Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field or a combination of education and experience that suits the position Prior experience working well with adults and children in healthcare, community and/or customer service settings is preferred Prior experience working in a medical/ophthalmic setting as a technician, medical/ophthalmic assistant, or scribe is preferred ADA Job Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
