New York, NY, United States (On-site) Contract (5 months 18 days) Published 4 hours ago Debugging / Performance Tuning cloud platform documentation code analysis COBOL Development Position Overview Verizon Sourcing LLC is seeking an experienced Mainframe COBOL Developer to support the modernization and migration of mission-critical legacy systems to cloud-based platforms. This role will focus on maintaining and enhancing existing mainframe applications while driving transformation initiatives to Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in COBOL development, mainframe environments, and a solid understanding of cloud integration and modernization strategies. Key Responsibilities Application Development & Maintenance Design, develop, maintain, and enhance COBOL applications running on IBM mainframe systems (z/OS). Ensure stability, performance, and reliability of business-critical batch and online processing systems. Support existing applications while implementing improvements aligned with modernization goals. Legacy System Analysis & Modernization Analyze and assess legacy COBOL codebases to identify dependencies, inefficiencies, and modernization opportunities. Document system architecture, data flows, and business logic to support migration planning. Recommend strategies for re-platforming, refactoring, or rewriting applications for cloud environments. Cloud Migration (GCP Focus) Lead or contribute to migration initiatives moving COBOL-based workloads to Google Cloud Platform. Re-engineer applications to ensure compatibility with cloud-native architectures, microservices, and containerized environments where applicable. Collaborate with cloud architects and engineering teams to integrate COBOL applications with GCP services such as Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, BigQuery, and Pub/Sub. Data Integration & Infrastructure Collaboration Partner with data engineering teams to support data migration, transformation, and validation processes. Work closely with infrastructure and DevOps teams to design scalable, secure, and efficient deployment pipelines. Ensure data integrity and seamless integration between on-premise mainframe systems and cloud-based platforms. Testing, Debugging & Performance Optimization Develop and execute comprehensive test plans, including unit, integration, and system testing. Troubleshoot and debug issues in both legacy and modernized environments. Optimize performance of COBOL programs post-migration to meet scalability and efficiency requirements. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience). 5+ years of experience in COBOL development within IBM mainframe environments (z/OS, JCL, CICS, DB2). Strong knowledge of batch processing, file handling, and transaction processing systems. Experience analyzing and documenting legacy systems for modernization or migration initiatives. The pay range that the employer in good faith reasonably expects to pay for this position is $48.54/hour - $75.85/hour. Our benefits include medical, dental, vision and retirement benefits.
