Job Description
MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN - LIBRARY APPLY Purpose of Job The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled work in the maintenance, repair and alteration of buildings, facilities and fixtures including minor carpentry, plumbing and electrical trades work for Knox County Public Library buildings. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to a drug screen. Essential Functions The Maintenance Tech is responsible for the following essential functions: Performs routine maintenance and general repair. Performs routine electrical maintenance and repair to include; removal/replacement of ballasts and bulbs in fluorescent fixtures; replacing light fixtures, switches, and duplex receptacles; replacing breakers, relays and fuses in panels; installing/removing light fixtures and performing general maintenance to all electrical equipment. Performs routine plumbing maintenance and repair including repair/replacement of faucets, commodes, sinks, urinals, removal/replacement of flush valves, unstopping and repairing drains, water, sewer lines, sump pumps, and maintenance on galvanized pipe, copper pipe, PVC or copper tubing. Provides general maintenance and repair to County Public Library buildings and equipment to include doors, roofs, drop ceilings, sheetrock repair, painting, installing shelves, end panels, removing furniture, assembling furniture, etc. Inspects buildings to identify maintenance needs and assess building problems, identifies a solution or contacts person responsible to fix the problem. Provides 24 hour on-call duty, works the required schedule and on an as needed basis. Operates a variety of mechanical tools and equipment such as drills, air compressors, sewer augers and various hand tools required for minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical and maintenance skills. Performs work with sprinkler system, fire alarm systems, and other fire protection systems. Identifies heating and cooling components to report problems. Additional Job Functions Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or central office supervisors, as part of a coordinated emergency response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office Ensure regular, punctual attendance during scheduled work hours Perform other duties as required Minimum Training & Qualifications High School diploma or GED required: Associates degree or apprenticeship in Mechanical Trades/electrical, plumbing preferred. Minimum of two years’ related experience in general maintenance, electrical and plumbing related work. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered for employment into the position. Specialized Knowledge Mechanical, Electrical or Plumbing Trades Competencies Basic understanding of computers, printers and other office equipment Ability to focus and demonstrate great attention to detail Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills Good organizational and time management skills Good verbal and written communication skills Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools, and equipment to include a telephone, cell phone, various power and hand tools. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials up to approximately 75 pounds. Must be able to discern different shades of color. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.
