Job Description
Since 1928, Asplundh Tree Expert LLC has been dedicated to safe, efficient, and innovative clearance services to the utility industry. A family-owned and operated corporation headquartered near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Asplundh has grown to employ over 36,000 diverse, energetic professionals throughout the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. At Asplundh, our mission is to be the recognized world leader in providing professional, safe, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable vegetation management and other utility-related services. We challenge our people to consistently exceed the expectations of the customers for whom we work and the people they serve. Asplundh has always been an innovator with a focus to look for a “Better Way” to improve its safety, productivity, and performance. Summary We’re hiring a technical fleet professional with a background and deep familiarity with construction/off-road equipment (e.g., drills, hydro excavators, dozers, excavators, trucks). This role bridges the gap between field operations, internal stakeholders, and external OEMs/suppliers—translating real-world use cases into clear equipment specifications, vendor requirements, and procurement-ready standards. You’ll help ensure we select, configure, and deploy the right equipment for safety, productivity, and total cost of ownership. Key Responsibilities The primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Partner with field leadership to understand job types, duty cycles, constraints, and pain points; translate into equipment requirements and functional specs. Own equipment specification development for priority categories (e.g., hydro excavation, HDD drills, compact equipment, support trucks, attachments). Interface with OEMs/suppliers on configuration, options, pricing drivers, lead times, and technical tradeoffs; ensure requirements are understood and met. Support equipment evaluations: demos, trials, performance scorecards, and technical comparisons across brands/models. Coordinate with internal groups (Fleet, Operations, Safety, Engineering, Finance) to align on standards, compliance, and lifecycle strategy. Drive standardization and governance: recommended models/configs, approved option lists, and documentation. Work with regions to approve Capex and Rental requests Build business cases (CapEx vs /lease, lifecycle costs, utilization assumptions) to support decisions. Create clear vendor-facing documentation (RFP inputs, spec sheets, acceptance criteria) and internal training/communications. Success Looks Like Faster, cleaner vendor communication and fewer “spec misunderstandings.” Better equipment fit for the work higher utilization and productivity, fewer change orders. Standardized configs that reduce cost, improve parts commonality, and simplify training/maintenance. Desired Skills and Experience Must-have Technical degree (Mechanical, Civil, Industrial, or similar) or equivalent technical experience in heavy equipment applications. Strong working knowledge of off-road / construction equipment specs and applications (hydro excavators, drills/HDD, excavators, dozers, loaders, etc.). Ability to translate field use cases into clear technical requirements and vendor-ready specs. Experience working with OEMs/dealers/suppliers (quoting, configuration, option selection, performance tradeoffs). Excellent communication skills—can speak to field crews and executives without losing technical accuracy. Comfortable traveling to field sites and vendor facilities as needed. Nice-to-have Experience in utilities, electrical construction, substations, pipeline, or industrial services. Familiarity with fleet lifecycle, reliability/maintenance strategy, and parts commonality. RFP / category management support experience. Basic analytics: Excel models, cost comparisons, utilization assumptions (TCO mindset). Travel Requirements: This position requires frequent travel (25-50%) Other Duties Please note this job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
