Summary GENERAL SUMMARY The Manager, Government Relations is responsible for the organization’s government relations program at the local, state and federal levels. The position studies and monitors healthcare policy and legislation in order to advocate, represent and protect the mission of CHKDHS. The role also develops, maintains and cultivates relationships with government and elected officials. Reports to departmental leadership. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES In collaboration with executive leadership, oversees the organization’s government relations program. Develops, maintains and cultivates relationships with government and elected officials, associations and agencies working to advance the CHKD mission through advocacy. Analyzes legislative proposals to understand the impact on the care of children and on the operations of the organization in order to advise executive leadership. Leads advocacy efforts on behalf of CHKDHS and oversees all advocacy efforts. Works with and manages supportive resources including government relations counsel and consultants to achieve advocacy goals. Communicates regularly with executive team and, as appropriate, with board members to facilitate objectives of the government relations program. Performs all other duties as assigned. REQUIRED LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS None REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s Degree required, or relevant combination of experience and education. Minimum 3 years’ experience in government relations PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Advanced degree preferred. Health-related experience preferred. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Strong leadership skills and capacity for self-direction to engage in legislative activities. Ability to travel regularly and as needed to Richmond, VA and Washington, D.C. Heavier, overnight, travel required during legislative sessions. Demonstrates track record of understanding, developing and executing legislative strategies. Ability to understand health care policy and financing including the Medicaid programs. Must have strong presentation and communication skills. WORKING CONDITIONS Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature and the like.
