About the Work Scobis Millwork + Design builds custom wood doors and architectural millwork for residential and commercial clients. 90% of our work is doors. Every project is different. You'll work with Sapele, White Oak, Accoya, Mahogany, Walnut, and occasional exotics. Projects range from single custom doors to complex millwork packages. You'll handle the most technically challenging builds and mentor craftsmen on your team. We work to AWI standards with written quality specs and shop drawings. Our rework rate is low because we build it right the first time. What You'll Do Technical Execution: Build complex custom doors and millwork from architectural drawings with minimal supervision Execute specialty joinery techniques: complex mortise-and-tenon, curved work, hand-cut dovetails, specialty hardware integration Work to tighter tolerances on high-value projects Problem-solve when builds don't go to plan (material defects, design conflicts, fit issues) Prototype new designs, techniques, and build methods Handle challenging materials (exotics, Accoya, veneer matching, figured woods) Mill, machine, fit, and prep components for finishing department Operate table saws, jointers, planers, shapers, routers, wide belt sander, drum sander Inspect your work and mentee work throughout fabrication process Shop Leadership: Train and mentor mid-level craftsmen on techniques, quality standards, and problem-solving Fill in for shop manager when they are out Assist with project scheduling and build sequencing Troubleshoot machinery issues and coordinate repairs Develop jigs, fixtures, and shop processes to improve efficiency or quality Provide input on equipment purchases and shop layout decisions Contribute to project estimating and feasibility discussions Project Management: Run multiple projects simultaneously Read and interpret complex architectural drawings Plan cut lists, material usage, and build sequences for complex assemblies Coordinate with shop manager on timelines and resource allocation Move materials and finished components using forklift and materials handling equipment Maintain organized workspace and follow shop safety protocols What You Need Experience: 10+ years in custom millwork, cabinetry, or door fabrication (production experience required) Mastery of jointers, planers, shapers, table saws, routers, sanders, and hand tools Deep knowledge of traditional and specialty joinery methods Experience reading complex architectural and shop drawings Proven ability to work to AWI Premium or Custom grade standards Track record of training or mentoring other craftsmen Skills: Solve complex technical problems independently Work with minimal supervision on high-value projects Diagnose and troubleshoot machinery issues Estimate material requirements and build sequences Communicate technical details to shop manager and team members Adapt techniques for challenging materials or unique designs Forklift certification preferred (or willingness to certify) Physical requirements: Lift up to 50 lbs (team lift for heavier stock) Stand and work at machines or benches for extended periods Clear vision for precision work Bonus experience: Experience with Accoya or exotic hardwoods Veneer matching and application Custom finish techniques (staining, glazing, hand-rubbed finishes) Jig and fixture design What We Offer Compensation: $35 to $45/hour based on experience Typical work week is 40 to 45 hours. Overtime paid at 1.5x.
