Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer / Production Shop Manager to oversee daily operations within our structural steel fabrication facility. This leadership role is responsible for managing shop production, optimizing manufacturing processes, supervising production personnel, and ensuring efficient operation of CNC and fabrication equipment. The ideal candidate will combine strong mechanical engineering knowledge with hands-on production leadership experience in a structural steel or metal fabrication environment. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage daily structural steel fabrication shop operations Supervise production teams including machine operators, fabricators, welders, and shop personnel Operate, oversee, and troubleshoot CNC machines and fabrication equipment including plasma tables, beam lines, saws, press brakes, drills, and robotic systems Coordinate production schedules to meet project deadlines and customer requirements Improve manufacturing efficiency, workflow, quality, and productivity within the shop Review engineering drawings, shop drawings, and production requirements to ensure accurate fabrication Monitor machine performance, maintenance schedules, and equipment utilization Ensure compliance with safety regulations, OSHA standards, and company procedures Collaborate with engineering, project management, and quality control teams to resolve production issues Develop and implement process improvements and lean manufacturing initiatives Train and mentor production personnel on equipment operation and best practices Track production metrics, labor utilization, and operational performance Assist with inventory management, material flow, and shop logistics Support continuous improvement efforts related to automation, fabrication methods, and production planning Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field preferred 5+ years of experience in structural steel fabrication, manufacturing, or industrial production leadership Strong experience operating and managing CNC machinery and steel fabrication equipment required Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and fabrication specifications Knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes, welding, machining, and production workflows Experience leading production teams in a manufacturing or fabrication environment Strong understanding of mechanical systems, tooling, and industrial equipment maintenance Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and production scheduling software preferred Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills Strong organizational and time-management abilities Preferred Qualifications Experience with automated fabrication systems and robotic equipment Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma experience preferred Knowledge of AWS, AISC, and structural steel industry standards Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred Physical Requirements Ability to work in a fabrication shop and industrial manufacturing environment Ability to stand, walk, and inspect production areas for extended periods Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs Comfortable working around heavy machinery, welding operations, and production equipment Pay: $45,729.09 - $50,630.73 per year Work Location: In person
