Job Description
The Metallurgist provides metallurgical and technical expertise to support foundry operations, product quality, and process improvement initiatives.This role leads metallurgical testing, supports new product launches, drives scrap and cost reduction efforts, and provides technical guidance across melting, heat treating, and austempering processes.The Metallurgist also supports daily laboratory operations, conducts failure analysis, and collaborates with cross-functional teams to improve manufacturing performance.Essential Functions Manage all metallurgical testing activities, including test planning, execution, analysis of results, and investigation of failures Train, evaluate, and qualify laboratory personnel; develop and maintain work instructions for lab operations Conduct metallurgical investigations to identify root causes and recommend improvements to casting processes Support scrap reduction, cost improvement initiatives, and new product/job launches Coordinate and deliver specialized metallurgical training across the organization Establish, refine, and maintain melt practices and process controls Collaborate with technical staff to develop and optimize melting and heat-treating processes to achieve desired material properties (strength, ductility, hardness, etc.) Provide daily support to laboratory operations as needed Lead technical support for austempering operations, including daily release decisions and problem resolution Support quoting of new austempered products, including cycle details and pieces-per-hour estimates Coordinate internal heat treat operations, including standard production and salvage work Provide technical support and education to corporate sales related to austempering and general foundry applications Manage pressure pour operations, including process controls and capital reline projects Support selection, evaluation, and implementation of foundry capital equipment Coordinate with purchasing on evaluation and qualification of new raw material options Perform failure analysis on returned customer products Perform other related duties as assigned Required Skills & Experience Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related field (e.g., Metallurgical Engineering with a minimum of 100 credit hours in Physical Chemistry) required Master's degree in a related engineering discipline is preferred Minimum of 12 months of experience using spectrometers Minimum of five (5) years of metallurgical experience in a manufacturing or foundry environment Additional Requirements:Ability to work independently in a self-directed environment while managing multiple priorities Strong knowledge of cast alloys, casting microstructures, sand processing, and heat treatment Proven ability to analyze data and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with internal and external stakeholders Commitment to staying current with advancements in metallurgical technology Work is performed primarily in a plant environment with exposure to heat, dust, fumes, and noise Must be able to walk, stand, reach, and bend without restriction Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.unassisted Required to wear OSHA-mandated personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, safety shoes, and hearing protection Why You'll Love Working for Us:Comprehensive Benefit Package including Medical, Vision, and Dental coverages Insurance:Life, Supplemental Life, Short and Long-Term Disability 401(K) Paid Vacation and Holidays Employee Assistance Program (EAP) PPE allowances Grede is proud to support transitioning service members and current military veterans with career opportunities that are a match for their skills gained while serving our country.Military veterans are encouraged to apply.As a Fair Chance employer, Grede is committed to considering individuals who are rebuilding after past challenges.We believe full-time employment can be a powerful step toward long-term success.To learn more about Grede, please visit our website at www.grede.com.We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company.We do not discriminate based on race, religion, color, national origin, sex, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.We will ensure that individuals with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodation to participate in the job application or interview process, to perform essential job functions, and to receive other benefits and privileges of employment.Please contact us to request accommodation..
