Job Description
JOB Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, the Network Engineer plans, directs, manages, and oversees the activities and operations of the City’s Technology Department, including network infrastructure, systems administration, and cybersecurity; performs related duties as required. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following: Maintain computer networks, including VPNs, routers, and other hardware. Install and configure network equipment. Manage cabling tasks, including pulling, routing, terminating, and labeling CAT5/CAT6 network cabling. Manage network security, including configuring firewalls and updating antivirus protection software and data security systems. Monitor computer systems to optimize network performance. Troubleshoot, resolve, and communicate network issues to staff and management. Implement disaster recovery procedures. Maintain current knowledge of security and networking best practices to ensure effective solutions and protection of City systems. Design, install, integrate, operate, and administer servers, firewalls, and network devices. Monitor Windows system alerts and assist in resolving complex hardware and software issues. Administer efficient work of servers and provide support for daily operations. Analyze system failures and assist in restoring systems and data. Manage the City’s Technology Department operations, including computer operations, technical support, systems analysis, programming, database management, geographic, network, telecommunications, and IT training. Serve as Acting Technology Officer in their absence. Review computerized and manual systems and processes to identify opportunities for business process improvement, technology enhancements, software acquisition, and efficient data storage and retrieval. Evaluate reports and service requests to ensure compliance with City policies and applicable laws. Oversee and participate in project management for system implementations and enhancements. Develop the Technology Department Annual Work Plan in coordination with the Technology Officer. Assist in developing and implementing policies, procedures, and short- and long-term objectives. Supervise staff, including assigning work, setting priorities, scheduling, and conducting performance evaluations. Select and oversee consultants and vendors. Prepare and administer the IT operating budget and staff reports. Forecast needs for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Safely operate City vehicles and equipment. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION (Must be performed with or without reasonable accommodations)Work is primarily performed in an office environment with frequent interaction with other employees and occasional exposure to moderate noise levels typical of office and technology settings. Physical demands are light and include prolonged periods of sitting, as well as standing and walking as needed. The incumbent may be required to lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 75 pounds. The incumbent must possess sufficient vision and hearing, with or without correction, to safely and effectively perform job duties. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, is required. The position may require extended work hours, including evening meetings and occasional after-hours response to operational needs.
