Job Description
The Radiology Department intends to hire for two positions at either the Nuclear Medicine Technologist classification or Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. The University of Iowa Health Care department of Radiology is seeking a Nuclear Medicine Technologist to perform a variety of complex nuclear medicine imaging and laboratory procedures that require independent judgment and initiative in order to obtain information for use by physicians in diagnosing or treating patient illness. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Operate radiation detection instruments to produce scintiscans and/or to measure concentrations of radioisotopes in specific body areas Prepare radioactive isotopes for administration to patients and to calculate proper doses Maintain records of tests conducted, test results and the use and disposition of radioactive materials Calibrate radiation detection instruments as prescribed by accepted methods to maintain quality control Provide instruction to medical residents, Nuclear Medicine Technology students, and other staff on the operation of various instruments and explain the procedures performed Use established radiation safety precautions to avoid radioactive contamination Provide information and instructions to patients about the nature of the requested diagnostic and/or therapeutic examination Establish relationships with patients and attend to physical and emotional needs Practice sterile techniques and prevent cross-contamination Demonstrate proficiency in performing all nuclear medicine procedures Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public Drive to a remote clinic may be a periodic requirement. The job may involve some travel by car, potentially to a location outside of the main clinic or city, to conduct work at a smaller or more isolated clinic SUPERVISION RECEIVED Supervision is received from the Chief Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist or other designated official. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff and students.
