Job Description
Mercy is seeking a dedicated Nuclear Medicine Technologist to join our Healthcare & Medical Services team and support our mission of providing compassionate, patient-centered care across the Midwest. As a vital member of our imaging department, you will perform a full range of nuclear medicine diagnostic procedures, using advanced technology and specialized radiopharmaceuticals to help providers accurately diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing, calculating, and administering radiopharmaceuticals in accordance with established protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements. You will operate PET, SPECT, and gamma camera imaging equipment to acquire high-quality images, ensuring proper patient positioning, technique selection, and image optimization. You will conduct quality control checks on equipment and radiopharmaceuticals, documenting results and promptly addressing any issues that could affect image quality or patient safety. Working closely with physicians, nurses, and fellow technologists, you will review patient histories, verify orders, and thoroughly explain procedures to patients and their families, helping to reduce anxiety and ensure informed consent. You will monitor patients before, during, and after imaging procedures, recognizing and responding to changes in condition, and following infection prevention and radiation safety guidelines to protect patients, colleagues, and yourself. You will adhere to ALARA principles at all times, maintain accurate records of radiopharmaceutical usage and disposal, and comply with all state, federal, and accreditation standards governing nuclear medicine practice. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist at Mercy will also play a key role in cardiac and other functional studies, including stress tests, gated imaging, and organ-specific examinations. You will process and reconstruct images using PACS and specialized software, perform basic image analysis, and ensure that all studies and associated documentation are complete, accurate, and available for interpretation by radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians. You will contribute to maintaining an efficient workflow, coordinating schedules, prioritizing urgent cases, and supporting a safe, organized work environment. Mercy fosters a culture of compassion, diversity, and respect, and you will be expected to model these values in every patient interaction. You will provide courteous, empathetic care to patients of all ages and backgrounds, tailoring communication to individual needs and maintaining strict confidentiality. Collaboration is central to our work, and you will actively participate in team huddles, interdisciplinary discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing quality, safety, and the overall patient experience. At Mercy, employees have the opportunity to grow professionally through ongoing education, cross-training, and exposure to lifesaving innovations in healthcare. As a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, you will be encouraged to stay current with emerging techniques and best practices, participate in in-service training, and pursue relevant certifications or advanced competencies. Your contributions will support not only accurate diagnosis and treatment but also Mercy’s broader commitment to community health and personalized, evidence-based care. This position is based in a hospital and/or outpatient imaging setting where on-site presence is essential for direct patient care and safe handling of radioactive materials. The role typically follows a full-time schedule, which may include rotating shifts, occasional weekends, holidays, or on-call assignments to support continuous patient services. Mercy offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, retirement savings options such as a 401k, and access to wellness and professional development resources, reflecting our commitment to the wellbeing and long-term success of our caregivers.
